Mormon Leaders Told To Stay Out Of Politics

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/30/mormon-politics_n_887868.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000008

" SALT LAKE CITY (RNS) Mormon officials are telling their top, full-time leaders that they and their spouses should not participate in political campaigns, including making donations or endorsing candidates.

However, part-time leaders -- including local and regional congregational leaders -- are still allowed to do that, but are cautioned to make clear they are acting as individuals and do not represent the church. "

"Buffers. Oh, ya, buffers. Yes, the Family uses lots of buffers."

I read the Huffington piece, and coverage in the Salt Lake Tribune. After looking at the details, this announcement from LDS Leaders looks more like yet another instance of saying nothing while appearing to say something. It's a CYA announcement, mostly related to the Romney and Huntsman campaigns.

The directive to stay out of partisan politics applies to very few church members.

The LDS spokesperson said the directive against working for political campaigns applies only to those who are full-time LDS Church workers. Since most of the church workers (Bishops, Stake Presidents, etc.) are supposedly volunteers and supposedly working part-time, they are exempt from the directive. The church does ask them to separate their actions as individuals from the official actions of the LDS Church.

The excerpts below are from the article in the Salt Lake Tribune:

"When the LDS Church declared political involvement off-limits for its senior leaders earlier this week, the policy decree covered only partisan campaigns and did not extend to matters the church deems to have 'significant community or moral consequences.'"

"That means Mormon leaders could take an active role in another Proposition 8-type campaign."

"...The church policy, issued June 16 by the church’s governing First Presidency, said top, full-time leaders and their spouses should not participate in political campaigns, including fundraising, donating or endorsing candidates...."

"The church’s policy bars such part-time church officials from partisan fundraising or campaigning that focuses on members of congregations they oversee, but again, not on key social issues."

--------
Okay, just declare whatever you're working on to be a "key social issue" and you're golden.

From Ezra Taft Benson's talk "14 Fundamentals in Following the Prophet" --

Tenth: The prophet may well advise on civic matters. When a people are righteous, they want the best to lead them in government. Alma was the head of the Church and of the government in the Book of Mormon; Joseph Smith was mayor of Nauvoo and Brigham Young was governor of Utah. Isaiah was deeply involved in giving counsel on political matters and of his words the Lord himself said, “Great are the words of Isaiah.”

According to today's paper, they gave themselves an out. They still get to comment on 'moral' issues.

Isn't this not new? Doesn't this go back, at least in part, to the Smoot Hearings, when Utah was a new state, and when LDS members had to get permission to run in politics/the Prophet would "recieve a revelation" that Bro So-And-So was to run for This Office?
