In announcing groundbreaking for 2 temples online:
"Church of Jesus Christ announces....
really? Now, the latter-day Saints part is being left off? It's now the original church? or is this a little error that will soon get corrected? I will return and report....hehe
I know, right? and KSL of ALL places knows that. It is so annoying when they do ANY new report about TSCC how they have to say that long name...that is why this headline is so funny to me.
The church instagram account is in the shorter name...
I suppose they realize that TCOJCOLdS is pretty much a household name for "No way I'm getting involved with them!"
So by going with the shorter name, COJC, they can hope to get out from under the opprobrium of the other, longer, name, and maybe sucker in some much needed adult converts, with jobs!
Too bad living by uptight rules is not what most people are looking for.
I'm waiting for Jesus to reveal a tithing rebate program!
Edited to add: OOH! OOH! Temple Virgins! I haven't figured out just exactly how they'd fit in, but c'mon! TEMPLE VIRGINS!!

Organized as the Church of Christ. This name was also used in OH. OH non-members called them Mormonites. A name which I love.
The church in MO, where Rigdon held sway, was called the Church of Latter-day Saints. Implying that it was a different church from the one in OH more immediately under JS.
Finally JS received a "revelation" combining the names.
Extra point. Latter-day was the British spelling. Since so many of the apostles and members were in Britain or came from Britain and so much of the church's publishing was done in Britain, this became the standard spelling even for UT Mormons.
The CofC, which did not have the same ties with Britain adopted the US spelling, Latter Day.
My recollection, and confirmed with a quick search, is that the Morg's media kit/style guide "encourages" using the "Church of Jesus Christ." Dear God.
Specifically, it says, "When a shortened reference is needed, the terms "the Church" or the "Church of Jesus Christ" are encouraged."
I like the media outlets that just call them the "Mormons". That's what they will always be known as.
