many of us have read some of the weird stuff that came to us from Brigham's orifice...

Then, apologists have said that was reported in the JoD wasn't reliable....

So: if it wasn't reliable... Since it was published by ChurchCo (correct, Yes?) ... then why was it included in the JoD in the first place, Why did ChurchCo publish it????

Since it reached the members from official sources, they were told to believe it; Now, apologists say we don't have to believe it (all, just selected portions)...

See how Wonderful, Marvelous things are in Morland? It's obviously DIRECTLY from HF, isn't it (pause)?

I don't know that we teach that anymore.

I do not know that we emphasize it.

Didn't Briggy say that if he said it, whether from sermon or not, it was doctrine?

Anyway, while looking for the quote I found this :-) :

Comedy writers need to discover the Journal of Discourses. Great material there for Loud Laughter.

The "nice" parts from this book seems to be ok for church, but the "not-so-nice-parts" (and there is some of those...) seems to be a big problem for leaders in church...and I have been told many times when I was an active mormon that things that I questioned from Journal of discoures are antimormonism.

How could it be, if it´s written in churchs own books? And Brigham Young said something like his sermons are holy as the scriptures...Oh my Gosh, there is a lot of fury and insanity in that book, which shows the true side of what mormonism was in those times.

The Journal of Discourses was like the Mormon Talmud. Very long and rarely read in full by most members.

Nelson is saying the same thing...We read the BoM wrong...We need to focus on the best parts instead of starting at the beginning...

Yes, he really said that in one of the previous conferences.

We should doubt our doubts before we doubt our non-doubts...

Reading my ur-g-grandfather's journal, the JoD and HoTC is what started my path out. The God I knew wouldn't demand those things.

The BYU religion course student manuals are full of carefully selected quotations from the JOD.

If you want to know whether a sermon or a quotation from the JOD is inspired or not, it's very simple actually: If the quote is embarassing, then the leader was just speaking as a man. If it is not embarassing, then it was inspired.

It doesn't matter if they, as Young often did, claim that every sermon they preach was inspired. Since Briggy isn't here to speak for himself, he gets overruled, even by someone who has no LDS office.

I've always claimed that I left the Mormon church by reading only church-approved materials. Whenever I cite the materials without saying so first, people tell me that it's all "anti-Mormon claptrap." When I then show them the source, claptrap suddenly becomes "merely speaking as a man." Mormons somehow have it both ways.

I agree Cludgie I read church materials and it was actually those materials that led me out of the church.

That and being honest with yourself - that could very well be the juncture where some members make the U turn.

Briggy said 2 important things:

*paraphrased* (not time to look it up ATM)

If I said it, it is Doctrine!

As a Profit, my word is the word of god and shall stand the test of time!

Both from the JoD.

There needs to be a searchable version online.
