“Adultery, promiscuity, elective abortion, and out-of-wedlock births are but some of the bitter fruits that grow out of the immorality sanctioned by the sexual revolution,” Apostle D. Todd Christofferson.

In another thread,

https://www.exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,2337675,2337677#msg-2337677

elderolddog replied;

"I love it when people do silly things, like...

1) believe in immortality and that there are standards to be upheld to achieve it, and,

2) believe in immorality and that there are standards to NOT uphold to achieve it.

Apparently, you can't be both! Ya gotta pick one!

Which path have you elected to travel?"

So apparently according to elderolddog, it's silly to believe in immorality and presumably morality?

"Morality: a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person or society."

This is the system of values and principle of conduct I rely upon,

"A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." Albert Einstein

I not only think 'silly', I am 'silly'.

And you don't, and can't, get it...

The topic of morality and religion is huge, and better brains than mine have weighed in on it. But in my experience the moral code of a religion is mostly based on what its members think the rest of the world wants them to say they believe.

You make it sound silly!

I think the amusing "problem" here is the difference between "immortality" [which was cited in the original post title] and "immorality" [which was the word obviously intended by the OP].

But...

Can 'amusing' ever be silly?

Because 'silliness' is what the OP wants condemned, while I want it hallowed.

Care to play along? Care to vote?

"Amusing" can indeed be "silly."

I am fully in favor of hallowed silliness, since what would life be without silliness?

My answer: Life would be often dreadful without silliness, so silliness is important to us all.

I support the "don't be a dick" system of values and principles of conduct.

Seriously: Be a mensch.

Make every part of the world you walk through better--for everyone (and the planet)--because you passed through.

Here are some of my "principles and values" for you:

-If faced with a problem, ask "What would an asshole do?" Then, avoid doing the asshole move. See Dave's post for a variation of this.

-Have some humility; nobody likes a tosser.

-Learn to laugh at yourself; everyone else is laughing at you already.

-Several folks will lie to you about knowing "universal truths." Others will lie to themselves about knowing "universal truths."

-There are times when the answer it to stand tall and persevere. Other times, the answer is "Fuck this!" and have a beer.

What if, like me, you're 5'2" tall and don't drink alcohol?

Then say "Fuck this!" and have the relaxing drink of your choice.

You don't drink alcohol. Does that mean you post while SOBER?

The mind reels.

but who gets to decide what an 'ass hole' is, who gets to decide who qualifies for being good?

Many people confuse good with slick. Many people confuse Ass Hole with honesty.

Einstein! Why not? He's a genius. Could you do any better?

Einstein was a loser. He was a master of the quadratic equation and, even worse, he did not believe in Manifest Destiny or American Exceptionalism.

Values, principles. Everyone lists the same ones that a Miss America contestant would. The golden rule. Meh.

But as long as we are on the subject . . .

You don't have to decide who is one because ass holes advertise themselves as such. Not indulging them is a value. Perhaps one of the most important values.

Taking the road straight through is a value rather than taking the fabled high road which actually indulges ass holes.

Actually listening to people is a value. Listening for listenings sake. Ass holes don't do this. They talk over everyone.

Standing courageously alone is a value. Doing so often means you are not an ass hole. Not always, but hey!
