SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — At a Latter-day Saints for Trump rally in Arizona on Wednesday night, Utah Sen. Mike Lee compared the president to a hero from Latter-day Saint scripture.

Lee rallied the crowd in Arizona with callouts to Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals, and Mormons, comparing President Donald Trump to Captain Moroni.

"To my Mormon friends, my Latter-day Saint friends, think of him as Captain Moroni," the senator exclaimed.

Desperation, aimed at the most gullible people on the face of the earth.

- I believe about 99% of (Arizona) voters have previously decided who to vote for, ? many of their ballots already cast (IDK early or mail-in voting rules for Arizona)

I'd elaborate more on this, but I think the above suffices

I know that the leaders try to stay out of (national) politics, but isn't Mike Lee becoming an embarrassment for them? Sounds like Court of Love time.

He's on the right. They can't punish him without alienating the 1/3 of Mormonism who are radical right: Bundys, Rowe, Westovers, half of Idaho. The list goes on.

Lee is safe.

Which brings up the central problem of religion in our day. You are right. But why do they choose to drive away the moderates or liberal members by supporting the right wingnuts? It goes beyond maintaining good feelings. The G-15- or at least the ones who are really in charge- are 100% in sympathy with Trump and his base. So why did the church choose to promote such leaders?

I seriously do not think the balance of opinion in the Q15 favors Trump. They know they need Latinos, Africans, and other "foreigners" and they do want someone with a semblance of family values. So they sent out the coded "don't vote for an amoral asshole" letter to the stakes and wards in late 2016; and now they have Oaks praising BLM and have been making other statements in conference about moral leadership. It's disguised, to be sure, but they are trying to put distance between the church and the GOP, such as it has become.

Is that all sincere? No, some portion of the new rhetoric is hypocrisy. But Trump has been terrible for the church; he's undercut federal support for families, encouraged governmental and familial corruption, and, even worse, turned most of the world against the US. For Mormonism has always expanded internationally on the back of US prestige. Much more Trumpism and the missionary program will be dead.

So why do they refrain from moving against the political right now? Because 1/3 or more of the church is very much committed to Trump and the xenophobic American Exceptionalism he purports to represent. The problem is that having abandoned so much of conservative Mormonism in an effort to mainstream themselves, the Q15 have offended a lot of the traditional base and see in Snuffer and Rowe and others the makings of an internal schism between the wishy-washy SLC crowd and those who hunger after the old values and doctrines.

That's why the church hasn't disciplined the Bundys, opting whenever possible to silence Rowe and others quietly rather than publicly. It's also why their anti-Trump feelings are couched in pro-BLM and other semi-progressive rhetoric rather than aimed directly against the president. They don't want to split the church down the middle.

me: IDK that the Q15 & minions 'really know' who their core supporters are, other than butts in the pews & tithing receipts which are, after all, the two things they care about the most (other than being MoRoyalty).

Everything outside of their rote patter they speak to seems to have a short shelf life; Most former doctrines & principles have been badly diluted, even honesty (per TRIQ).

Oh, they know their core--or rather their two cores, the centrist conservatives and the Bundy/Westover/Rowe right. Do remember that they routinely send GAs to sit in on local meetings, constantly use opinion surveys to monitor member thinking, and have some of the finest PR advisors in the world.

They know their market, as evidenced by Oaks's latest claim that the church is not racist and supports BLM. They wouldn't do that if they didn't see the train light from down the track.

If you look at a Trump rally, it’s like a Kim Jong Un appearance. There’s a religious fervor, I think driven by a hunger for apocalyptic purification with Trump as their personal savior. Most of us shake our heads at the support he has among evangelicals and the far right, but this is no small segment of the population. It’s easy to forget that rapture porn like “Left Behind” is some of the best selling books ever. This is sphincter factor stuff. There are just too many people waiting for their dark fantasies to be fulfilled.

"To my Mormon friends"

Oops! Win for Satan!

-----

I thought Cap'n Moroni was this studly dude with a power lifter's arms, not some obese guy with a spray tan and a bad comb-over.

"And when Moroni beheld the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, behold, his knees smote together, and his guards removed him and took him down to inspect his bunker; and the fortifications thereof were very good."

Good to know. Thanks Mike.

Mike Lee was (not completely secretly) hoping to fill the next vacancy on with the Supremes, but when trump refused to seriously consider his request / pleas...

Lee did this as an obtuse retaliation / 'get-back' to embarrass trump, but:

fortunately, this attempted insult wasn't discerned by Donald who won't re-retaliate...

Lee also said: "He [POTUS] seeks not power, but to pull it down. He seeks not the praise of the world or the fake news, but he seeks the wellbeing and the peace of the American people."

How bizarre and Orwellian this seems. On Earth 2 where I live, he (POTUS) appears to be a power seeking fake news generator who doesn't care about the wellbeing of the people and even encourages conflict. I have multiple examples as evidence. I have never seen anyone so intent on seeking praise for himself.

How bizarre it is that there are opposite realities for people like Lee and me. Lee brings up a fictional religious character. Would it be any different if he had compared POTUS to Superman? He thinks Moroni was real.

Mike Lee as a potential future Supreme is down right disturbing.

It's sobering to realize just how easily humans are manipulated, especially using religion as a tool. It's all the more reason to check the facts outside of our own biases.

There's a pattern here. Lee thinks that Trump is like Moroni, stomping into a metaphorical Washington and demanding that the government get God. Constitutional niceties be damned. So Trump is the new Moroni, the anti-constitutionalist demagogue who wants to set up a new personalty-centered cult.

Lee said something similar the other day.* “Democracy isn’t the objective; liberty, peace, and prosperity are." That logic may be seen in the BoM--or in the words of Caesar, Lenin and Trotsky, Hitler. That's totalitarianism right there, the notion that there are other political systems (read: "government by me") that are superior to democracy.

Lee goes on: "We want the human condition to flourish. Rank democracy can thwart that.” Lee is clearly a not a believer in constitutionalism or in republican democracy. He thinks a general overthrowing a democracy is a laudable event. That's a very Mormon attitude: it was Joseph Smith's platform when he ran for president, it was the logic of the Council of 50. It was the logic of Brigham Young's Deseret Kingdom. Sadly we sometimes also see it among ex-Mormons, people who have rejected the religion per se but not the broader theocratic impulses implicit in it.

Utah should be ashamed of Mike Lee.

ETA: I'd frankly recommend reading the entire article. It has all sorts of intelligent people pointing out Lee's logical errors and identifying him as exactly what he is, a crypto-totatitarian.

So a mess of pottage it is.

You would think the non-Mormons in the crowd would be laughing at him, but they know you have to throw a bone to your religious base. They needed Lee to say something to give a nod to the Mormons in the crowd.

IMO, just like politicians have to say "God" all the time (waving a Bible and quoting scriptures) to make sure believers are happy, Mormons like to hear their religion acknowledged too.

As much as some Evangelical types loathe the BoM as heresy, I think they understand the need to throw a bone to Mormons to get votes. The danger is that Lee probably believes Moroni was real which demonstrates questionable critical thinking skills.

Lee said that he DIDN'T vote for Donnie in 2016; because of a semi-viable third-party on the ballot, Don only got 45% in Utah / 2016.

What % he gets in 2020 will be EXTREMELY INTERESTING!!

Mike Lee: "Fact-checking is a form of censorship"

And being found wanting in a fact check is a form of, at best, incompetence, and at worst, lying.

So there's that. Lee in really getting in touch with his Inner Authoritarian.
