My wife’s mother died when she was young. I was well into middle age when my mom died. My wife and I used to have fun speculating if our mothers had met in the celestial kingdom. My mom loved to play Yahtzee, so we wondered if our mothers got together to play Yahtzee, but we figured that if they were in heaven, both of them would get a Yahtzee with every roll. That certainly doesn’t sound like fun.
I remember an episode of The Twilight Zone where a small time crook gets shot and killed by the police. He meets his guide, who takes him to his luxury suite. He is fed the most delicious meals. He goes to the casino and always wins. He goes to the bar and always picks up the most beautiful women. He thinks he’s in heaven at first, but eventually he gets no satisfaction from always winning. He finally figures out he’s not in heaven.
In my TBM days, I always had trouble thinking about how eternity could be anything but dull. Sure, creating your first world would be great, but by the time you got to “worlds without number,” wouldn’t you go insane from the monotony? Once you had perfect knowledge, nothing could surprise you, wouldn’t that drive you nuts?
I’m actually quite comfortable with the idea that when I die, that’s it. No more me.
