"A cockerel that had been fitted with a knife for an illegal cockfight has killed its owner in southern India.

The bird's owner was impaled in the groin by the knife as the animal tried to escape. The man died on the way to hospital from a loss of blood.

Police are now searching for 15 more people involved in the event, which took place in the village of Lothunur in Telangana state earlier this week.

The animal was held at a police station before being transferred to a farm.

Police said the animal was being readied to take part in a fight when it tried to escape. Its owner attempted to catch it but was struck by the 7cm-long (three inch) knife on the bird's leg during the struggle."

I was under the impression only 1 for each year; in that case, there could be 'better' winners!

A Darwin Award goes to anybody who removes him/her/itself from the gene pool by death. All Darwin Awards are posthumous, so this man is a very strong candidate.

Had he survived, he might have won a Darwin Honorable Mention, for candidates who remove themselves from the gene pool, but otherwise survive. Just the thing for your trophy case.

The Darwin Award admins have declared that alcohol invalidates a nomination, as it must be a candidate's natural recklessness, carelessness, or rank stupidity that "done him in." They also decline nominations of people falling off heights while taking selfies, because of the overabundance of such events.
