During the quarantine I developed a new habit -- binge watching Youtube.

So there I was, watching a National Geographic special on King Tut.

It seems that we know a lot more about the boy king now that all kinds of genetic tests have been run on him, like we know his father was Akhnaton and his mother was one of Akhnaton's sisters. No surprise there. We kind of suspected this all along.

Okay. Here is the Mormon connection.

Much of Tut's genetic analysis was done at "A large university in Provo, Utah."

Hmmm. I wonder which university THAT was.

They referenced the university several times throughout the documentary but they NEVER once said either "BYU" or "Brigham Young University." Not ONCE.

I wonder why.

What if it were Princeton University? Would they say the "New Jersey University?

Is the LDS church ashamed of BYU?

It's an accredited college. I'm sure they did a good job. Everyone wants to know more about King Tut, like how did he die, who were his parents, was he a monotheist like his father, or what? So the BYU did their bit to help things along once they got ahold of Tut's DNA.

I don't think the National Geographic has a policy against saying the names of colleges.

So whose idea was it?

What's up?

Edit: I don't think it was the LDS establishment which hid the identity of BYU, but National Geographic. Perhaps the National Geographic Society thought that identifying a Mormon institution detracted from the legitimacy of their research?

If so, LDS' efforts to mainstream the cult has a long way to go.

Dunno. But I would find it odd if the NatGeo people didn't know all about the Mormon Nephite/Lamanite tours in Central America and the BoM and want a little distance from that.

Which begs the question, Why did the testing end up being done there?

Mebbe they had the best genetics lab around when it came to testing ancient mummies.

Of course, Joseph Smith could have answered all those burning questions without the help of any labwork. He had done it before.

But I'm sure whoever made the decision thought BYU was best for their purposes.

Hugh Nibley once led a group of tourists on a tour of Egypt.

HN was quite the Egyptologist.

OMG. A positive bit about Hugh Nibley. Not sure I can process this, haha.

I'm sure BYU has some impressive parts too----I say begrudgingly.
I just wondered if there were any politics behind the decision.

Lots of positive things to say about HN.

Read his biography, written by his son-in-law, or read about his war experiences written by his son.

Don't limit yourself to what Martha has to say.

The man is a mystery, but he was a true believer.

I wished I could have gone along on his tour of Egypt.

Please! I'm trying to accentuate the negative here!

I just remember how thrilled my parents were when his book came out, "No Maam That's Not History," and they could declare victory over Fawn.

But thanks for the bigger picture.

"Book?"

Hardly. That was a little pamphlet of about 10 pages, every bit as rigorous as Nibley's analysis of the BoA.

I bet 99% of those pamphlets were never read and served merely as decorations on TBMs' bookshelves.

Ha! Pamphlet. Good to know. Never saw one and now I know why. All these years I thought it was a grand tome of a rebuttal.

Just looked it up on Amazon. The original appears to have been 62 pages in length. The font size on that thing must have been enormous.

Anyway, you'll be glad to know you can procure a used copy of Nibley's opus for a mere $50.

But don't forget that Nibley had no credibility among his egyptologist peers. Of course, they were only S'POSED to be his peers; they always knew or believed that large portions of his work published among Mormons was no more than an attempt by him to pacify the church by writing "expert" analyses that bolstered belief in Joseph Smith among the members of the church. No true expert values/valued his so-called "research." It is believed (and I can't verity the story except for its consistency) that all his footnotes and the indexes at the back of the book were just made up, grabbed out of the air, knowing that no one--or at least no Mormon--would check them out for accuracy, anyway. Then along comes his daughter, who claimed that his work was indeed invented to a large degree.

I once took a class the entire semester taught by W. Clingon Scouser. Even though I knew little about him, it seemed that his brain was pitching and rolling with some pretty bizarre "facts" connected to his published time-line books ("The First 1000 Years," and such), which all Mormons sincerely believed in. After all, ALL Mormons constantly grab at stories that appear to bolster their belief. Personally, I put Nibley right up there with with ol' Cleon, but that might be my own form of confirmation bias.

Yeah, that's all true.

I'm not even going to try to defend old HN's footnotes, except to say they were very creative.

I still would have liked to tag along his Egyptian tour.

HN as an egyptologist?

I haven't laughed so hard in many years.

I have is book on the Joseph Smith papyri.

Best part is when he blatantly showed the world he couldn't tell the difference between male and female.

His fake footnotes? Pure rubbish.

Best thing his books are good for is fuel in the pot belly stove.

Don't know how acurate this is?

"FYI: The "Mormon Church" as you describe it is actually a team at BYU that specializes in genetic identification of family relationships. One of their geneticists is one of the top in the country and to date, they have identified a number of unknown mummies who have been floating around various museums. They have also built a genetic family tree. There is all sorts of things one can learn about ancient Egypt this way. (For example, just because historical records say that two people are related, it doesn't mean they are genetically.) The BYU team has no interest in it from a religious perspective. King Tut wouldn't provide any additional "religious" information than the other 30+ mummies they have already worked with. They are very interested in it from a scientific perspective which is another way of saying that they are curious as all scientists should be."

Well, there you have it.

I knew there was a reason those Egyptologists chose that Prove University.

Of course there is no religious connection, but those Pharaonic families sure do remind me of the Kingstons.

The Mormons have the Aaronic priesthood, and the Pharaohs have the Pharaonic priesthood, so mebbe there is more here than meets the eye.

But poor King Tut will never rest in peace. Since Howard Carter had to cut the body up in order to extract it from his coffin, King Tut will rest in pieces.

Talk about being even MORE famous after you're dead -- just like Elvis, the king.

I learned all I need to know about King Tut from Steve Martin. The Mormon church is a cult, regardless of what any ancient Egyptian studies reveals to us.

Jesus gave his life to pay for our sins
Joseph Smith gave his life in pursuit of other men's wives
King Tut gave his life for tourism

It moved to Orem in 1977, back when it was "Utah Technical College at Provo", before becoming "Utah Valley Community College", then "Utah Valley State College", then "Utah Valley University".

I think that many international scholarship organisations, like National Geographic, are loathe to put any truck in BYU publications. The story is (and I believe it) that any scholarly publications from BYU have the duty to add credibility to the Joseph Smith-myth, and therefore makes any of their publications more that a bit sketchy. Suppose they had acknowledged BYU; there would be people coming out of the woodwork decrying Nat'l Geo for using research from a dodgy source such as BYU.

I dunno. I think the current policy is to pretend that neither JS or BY ever existed, and the LDS church is the most Christian church on the planet, just look at their new logo a statue of Christ created by a Lutheran artist in the 19th century, who had never heard of Mormonism.

The CoJCoLDS is CHriSTIAN CHRISTIAN CHRISTIAN, and all that fuss about restoring the Priesthood and polygamy and Blood Atonement is just LIES created by our ENEMIES.

Mormons are just plain vanilla Christians like everybody else.

Oh, come on. BYU is not primarily a research university, so the pressure for publications is not as intense as at other schools, but the faculty publish plenty of papers, in the usual academic journals.

Also BYU grads and former BYU faculty get hired at other universities. I used to be on search committees and saw the CVs.

If I can shoehorn in a comment on Hugh Nibley - I have him to thank for my waking up to the fraud that is Mormonism, and that long before Martha said word one about him. I read his papers on the BoA papyri after they were rediscovered and returned to LDS Inc. And I am one of those people who actually does read the footnotes. It was obvious to me he had bupkis supporting the Mormon claims about the BoA, and Nibley was just tap dancing.

It took me a few more years to actually leave, but Nibley broke the shelf.

That BoA work was appalling. And I think it took a toll on him. I believe Hinckley knowingly lived a lie for so long his soul corroded, like Golem in LoR if I may put it that way, but without any capacity for good.

I got the sense that something similar happened to Nibley, for more than ever before he knew he was lying in support of a lie. He grew grimmer, more empty, from that point on.

King Tut (King Tut)
Now when he was a young man,
He never thought he'd see
People stand in line to see the boy king.

(King Tut) How'd you get so funky?
(Funky Tut) Did you do the monkey?
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut).

(King Tut) Now, if I'd known
They'd line up just to see him,
I'd taken all my money
And bought me a museum. (king Tut)

Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He's my favorite honkey!
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut)

(Tut, Tut) Dancin' by the Nile, (Disco Tut, Tut)
The ladies love his style, (boss Tut, Tut)
Rockin' for a mile (rockin' Tut, Tut)
He ate a crocodile.

He gave his life for tourism.
Golden idol!
He's an Egyptian.

They're selling you!

Now, when I die,
Now don't think I'm a nut,
Don't want no fancy funeral,
Just one like ole king Tut. (king Tut)

He coulda won a Grammy, (king Tut)
Buried in his Jammies, (king Tut)
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia,
He was born in Arizona, got a condo made of stone-a,
King Tut!
