I was listening to the radio carrying while driving one of my kids and a child of one of the prominent leaders in the local ward. In the dialog between the radio personalities, one of the commentators exclaimed, "Oh my God!" at something the other said. There was no inappropriateness of the subject matter for 13 year old ears. The other kid blurts out that the radio station needs to be changed. I said it is ok and I would not turn off the radio. When I dropped that kid off, I spoke with my kid telling him the content is ok. It was not something that was inappropriate, and that I will not back down to a kid's sensibilities like that. Cannot wait to hear from the parents.

Should have replied "oh my god, I'm not turning off the radio!"

If "Oh Lord, my God" were good enough for Joseph Smith's last words what's a TBM to do?

How did the kid know which god the radio guy was referring to? Maybe they're Hindu, or maybe their god is nature.

Exactly. The man on the radio said "Oh MY god", not "Oh god" or "Oh your god". Freedom of speech anyone?

Hahaha... all these are good. Therapy if you will....

I explained to my kid that that was just ridiculous. I would have understood if it was the 'eff' word. He was, I guess. in agreement. My wife has raised the kids thinking that that is akin to the most depravest profanity you can use without a prescription.

I'll wonder if my wife brings it up with me by way of the parent. I might have to ready the 4 lettered words just in case... they are on standby.

God bless you was said with complete respect and reverence after a sneeze during the lesson of elders quorum. A well meaning investigator thought that was an appropriate comment but made a serious mormon faux pas instead.

For the next several minutes, various members corrected the guy who was simply trying to meet the mormons at their church. After being told off for using the lord's name in vain, he never returned.

Is that really a Mormon faux pas? I had no idea. O_O

It's a sad day when asking God to bless someone is regarded as inappropriate by practicing Christians. IMO.

Mormons avoid the word "God." They say "Heavenly Father" or "the Lord."

And they avoid “Jesus,” they say “the Savior.”

They even avoid Satan’s name by saying “the adversary.”

I'm not sure, but my sense is that the avoidance of the word "Satan" is not out of respect but rather discomfort with the name of some personal devil.

Put more bluntly, anyone talking about Satan sounds to modern ears like a kook. Using "the adversary" is less precise and can be interpreted as the forces of evil or just evil, which sounds a little more reasonable than referring to some individual, personal devil.

My older sister was a total hippy by the end of the 60's, early 70's (I was still aspiring to be one at 9 years old).

She hooked up with a communal type group of folks living in a house calling themselves the "Jesus People" and it was common for them to say "praise the lord" or "praise god" fairly often.

Our TBM dad gave her space and time to go through her phase (which it was) and never said anything, but I could see it was really bugging him inside when they did that.

My favorite one was while dad and I were sitting at the Jesus People house, someone got up and let the dog out the front door and someone else shouted "praise the lord for letting the dog out!"

It is indeed blasphemous to many members. The church used to hammer members about the fear of taking the lords name in vain.

There's members who use similar expressions~ oh my gosh and gosh darnit. And then there were those who thought those were too close to the real thing so they might say dag nabbit.

And I was told off by a peer while playing cars/trucks in his backyard. I might have been 9 or 10 and was told to stop saying "crap". He really was offended and told me that I could say crud instead. I was so shocked that I stopped playing and sat away from him the rest of the day; afraid that I might say something equally offensive. I couldn't wait to go home and never wanted to spend time with him again.

So fast forward 11 years from that experience. We're both RM fresh off our respective missions and traveling a good 40 miles to attend a singles ward on Sunday. He's blasting the radio with rock music all but the last 5 miles (the reverence zone he called it). All the while he's said sh$t 5 times due to traffic and even dropped the f bomb due to hitting a pot hole in the street.

And all I could think about that day was him correcting me about my choice of words.

Can you say H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E?

That's what the mormon church is all about. Going through the motions of being pious while looking down on others who don't measure up to your lofty standards.

https://www.allure.com/story/why-so-many-beauty-bloggers-are-mormon

Any insomniac who has tried to convince herself that “just a few minutes” on Instagram will beckon back sleep has landed, circa 3 a.m., on the feed of a Mormon lifestyle blogger. Although she probably has no idea that’s where she is. The blogger’s faith is never foregrounded. It’s obvious, though — once you know what to look for. She’s white and under 30 and married. Fit and given to flattering dresses that hit the knee and cover the shoulder, she has multiple children and Lady Godiva hair. She knows her way around a braid. She is wholesome but not dowdy; her posts are relentlessly positive but never pious. Until you Google her name and see that she was married at the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), you might not know that she routinely asks herself, while shopping or applying eye shadow, Would I feel comfortable with my appearance if I were in the Lord’s presence?

My prick of a trainer was insufferably self-righteous. I've mentioned before that he behaved (and physically walked) as though he had Lehi's iron rod shoved up his ass.

We were in the car; I was driving, and some jackbite cut us off and very nearly caused a collision. Knowing we had come close to disaster I muttered, "You turd," in the direction of Monsieur Jackbite. Prick Trainer turned to look at me and said in the most offended tone he could muster, "Don't you EVER use that word in my presence again."

The entire two months with him were like that. He'd been a ZL immediately preceding being assigned to train me for his final two months in the field. He considered it to be a demotion, greatly resented it, and of course took it all out on me, as I was the only target at hand. If only I'd had the self-confidence, composure, and perspective then that I do now…

On his last day, he offered to shake my hand as he departed for the mission home, and I refused to take it.

Ha! When my kid was 3 1/2 I was driving her to school one snowy and icy morning. We were stopped at a traffic light, first in line. Utah has a reputation for people pushing yellow lights and running reds. So you always wait a second before going. I waited, the coast was clear as I accelerated. About 4 seconds after we had a green, some woman, on her phone in an Infinity SUV blew the light. I threw my truck left (she was coming from the right). We spun a 360 and the other driver missed us by a foot. She kept going. I yelled "You stupid fucking bitch!" My kid, strapped in her car seat in the middle of the back seat, yelled at me. "Hey Dad, stupid is a bad word". I was, and am still, proud of her.

It is most definitely a Mormon faux pas.

OTOH, "blessing" someone after a sneeze is a pretty bizarre custom. You can half cough up a lung, and people might ask if you are OK, but nobody instructs God to bless you. Get a slight tickle in your nose, and everyone else (except those self-righteous Mos) is considered déclassé unless they invoke the Divine in your behalf.

What's up with that?

It's an old superstition.

I presume you know why they closed the eyes, or placed coins over the eyes, of deceased people. It was to stop the spirit from escaping the body and wandering the earth unredeemed. Gesundheit/Bless You is likewise an attempt to invoke divine ensurance that the spirit does not leave the body prematurely.

There are lots of sources for that, one of the earliest being Frazier's The Golden Bough.

Actually I had no idea. Spirit leaking from the eyeballs, eh? I suppose it makes some sense, I know that if the blue smoke ever leaks out of electronics, they are toast, usually literally. :)

There are variations on the theme. The Greeks came to believe the coins were to pay for crossing of Styx, but the Hebrews and even the Chinese had the same practice.

When the other kid's parents call you to complain, tell them their kid got it wrong. Tell them that what the guy on the radio actually said was "oh God, hear the words of my mouth". Then hang-up.

In a church where a twelve year old is told he has more power in his little finger than the President of the United States has, what do you expect?

They say teach them when they are young . . . and they will learn to become pious little pricks you can be so proud of.

Once when going home teaching one evening as a teen, the song "Lay Lady Lay" came onto the radio and the Adult Priesthood holder I was riding with said, "Well, that's not an appropriate song." And then we both enjoyed listening to it. Bob Dylan. What can you do? I guess he's the reason I went off the rails.

During a stake conference some years ago, the 2nd counselor was speaking. He got on his high horse and said how all of his family was going to be around for the 2nd Coming, how righteous his family was, and that he didn't want to hear any swearing within earshot of his family at anytime.
He then said: " I hereby declare the word "suck" to be a swear word."

It also makes me wonder if all of us are under condemnation who dared to utter the words: "Oh God; hear the words of my mouth".

Many a times I have shared my experiences dealing with the aaronic priesthood and terrible priesthood leaders/bishops.

By the time I became 16, there were only a few of us left attending the ward. The stake presidency had disciplined three quarters of those who had previously attended.

So the running gag was to enunciate the sacrament prayers in all manners of silliness: robot voice, extra slow, high pitched, nasal voice.

Yes, we were continually pulled aside and talked to, threatened...really~ who else was going to do the prayers???

So we really wanted to emphasize "god" so we would whisper the Oh part, then yell "God" then whisper the next few lines. The church microphone system did its part and we had people's ears ringing from all our high jinks.

Or as long as I was alive while he was. Most of the kids cussed when we were small as dad did. One time my mother was trying to cross main street at a stop sign (in Brigham City) and she wasn't having much success. My older sister (about 5 at the time) said, "Say what dad says. He always gets across."

Hoe beets and you'll learn to cuss. But I used to say crud a lot (per the story above) when I'd be hoeing beets and my sister made so much fun of me. I don't think I've used the word since.

I learned to not cuss after I quit working on the farm, but then I had twins and I've never stopped cussing since.

My son was playing with some toys once when he was quite young and he yelled out "bastard" in talking between his toys. He had no idea it was a cuss word. We still laugh about it. My daughter's favorite word as a teen as _uck and now she's a good little mormon and says thinks like "son of a biscuit."

"Oh my heck" is a pretty good phrase for identifying Mormons. I've heard it often enough that it no longer sounds silly.

My dad's favorite pseudo-swear word was "malarky", as in "that's a load/bunch of malarky". Who'd have thunk that word would be having a moment in 2021? Thanks, Uncle Joe.

My dad lived in near Scranton PA for part of his life, so apparently it was a popular word in the region back in the day.

So the parents did not call me, the mom called my wife and complained that there were two things her kid felt were a bad influence in the car ride earlier this week. 1) the lord's name thing discussed earlier. And 2) the guys on the radio were talking about making a pot of coffee. The kid could not handle hearing about someone making a pot of coffee. OH MY FUCKING HECK!!!!! Wife was very sympathetic and apologetic that I was so insensitive to the kid's sensibilities. Me thinks that kid will have lots of problems coping with life and probably already does. Me also thinks that these adults messing up these kid's brains are the bigger problem.

I have little hope for these goofballs...good luck to them in their Celestial kingdom. Only fools rush in there.

I was the extremely devout child. I had to save my family. BUT my dad drank coffee. His parents drank coffee and I spent a lot of time at my grandparents' house as they lived on the farm and my dad ran the farm. All my dad's siblings and spouses drank alcohol at parties and between. I don't believe my mother ever did, but my dad said she never cared that he drank alcohol. He also chewed tobacco, as did my grandfather. My dad said the word of wisdom is bullshit.

I lived around cussing, per above. We were never limited on what shows we could watch or movies we could go to. Anything I didn't do, I chose not to do.

BUT because of how I was raised, I saw a way out. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had the family I grew up in with what I faced. Actually, my family always knew that little old devout cl2 would go out to smoke with them or go buy the cigarettes (not underage).

I HAVE ALWAYS FELT much more comfortable with the heretics.

Coffee. Boy, they must not even have a TV????

Like you, I had all sorts of family and experiences where I was around coffee, smoking family, some drinking. I never thought anything of it and my parents would not carry on about any lost of fallen states or try to shield it form our eyes. And even after seeing the BS of the faith structure, I still have yet to smoke or drink alcohol. It just does not interest me. Coffee I will drink and think it is a better alternative to the energy drinks... but any way. I don't know what these parents think by shielding and policing to that granular level. Lord help them all, because when they find out there might not be a Mormon Lord who lords over such aspects of their lives, they will need to be brought down to earth gently. It will probably be an impact complete with an emotional crater in their lives.
