I think that by now, it must have occurred to the leaders of the Mormon church that they made a blunder when they used the benign term "correlation" to wrest control of the church by a few old men, yanking away, for instance, the Relief Society from the women, so that they could better control individual female thought--which, I guess, must have been way too dangerous for the old men to even ponder. But for a while (except for the whole racism thing), they had a fairly good church going on there, so good that people were leaving their own churches to join Mormonism. Good times. Sucking out all the fun and micromanaging the church from on high, was a big, big mistake. They MUST know this, but in order to keep them from looking like the rubes they are, they have never ceased to try to tweak this and that, all of which, so far, are fails.

It's very basic. The LDS has more splinters than an Oregon sawmill.

Correlation was about control. They were terrified of splits and heresy. They took the Vatican as a template, but ended up more like Office Space than the Holy Office.

It was nice when they could independently do silly shit and talk nonsense as they pleased.

Plausible deniability works wonders.

Do you think Wilkinson’s tenure at BYU had anything to do with correlation? They happened about the same time. It could have been a case of the tail wagging the dog.

The one thing you need for Correlation to work is uniformity. Dissent and disagreements must be stifled. But then the question arises: whose voice will get chosen? It always ends up being the most strident and Pharisaical members, because they speak the loudest and they speak first. Then in order to maintain uniformity without disagreement, they get chosen as the spokespersons for the organization. And they get chosen to fill all the leadership positions because they are the most supportive of the organization as well. "Spiritual" is hard to quantify. "Patriotic" is much easier.

Correlation had a dark sibling. Consolidation.

All monies and the control thereof was consolidated in Salt Lake.

Budgets were slashed. Fast offering funds depleted. No funding for women programs or youth programs.

Eventually consolidation of missionary funds.

With people wishing definitive answers / direction for their lives, people who wish to have anomalies resolved,

easier access to information (i.e. Internet) has been the real killer;

Q. how did the GAs react?

A. By revising nearly Everything in sight, Diluting their talks/remarks/speeches & writings ... all that's left is:

- We don't know

- What's WRONG with YOU for asking questions?

- Pure, 100 % PALP in what they say, write; "Don't quote me on that", Don't record talks, remarks, speeches.
