This assumes what it is people want to believe is comprehensible. We have nothing comprehensible in the metaphysics of existence. Even materialists guess at origins and reasons for being.

Yes. Nicely put. The important thing is to relieve yourself of the responsibility.

The handy phrases, "There's no way I could have known that!" and "There's no way anyone could have know that" are more important than the need to know and let's one off the hook of looking for the truth which is runs the risk of the truth being inconvenient.

Besides putting their faith in others, they also put their faith in those who will tell them what they want to hear.

Gazelles don't want to understand, so they have faith that lions understand.

How many people have faith that their meat is being processed humanely? How many people trust the chemicals in what they ingest without looking it up?

Gazelles understand that they don't want to be too close to lions.

We, on the other hand trust our own species to understand the golden rule. It is probably working out worse than those gazelles.
