Elon Musk unveils Tesla Bot, a humanoid robot utilizing Tesla's vehicle AI

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday unveiled a humanoid robot called the Tesla Bot that runs on the same AI used by Tesla's autonomous vehicles. A functioning version of the robot didn't make an appearance during Musk's reveal, though a slightly bizarre dance by a performer dressed like a Tesla Bot was.

The unexpected reveal came at the end of Tesla's AI Day presentation, with Musk providing few details about the Slenderman-like Tesla Bot outside of a few PowerPoint slides. The 5-foot-8 robot will weigh in at 125 pounds and be built from "lightweight materials," he said.

Three slides detailed the robot's proposed specifications, and Musk made sure he pointed out that you could both outrun the Tesla Bot and "overpower" it. He has, in the past, rallied against the use of robots as weapons and warned of the risks AI might pose -- once calling it the "biggest risk we face as a civilization." I guess if they're your incredibly slow, easy-to-overpower robots, the dangers are reduced.

"We should be worried about AI," Musk reiterated during a question and answer session after the presentation. "What we're trying to do here at Tesla is make useful AI that people love and is... unequivocally good."

It was just a friendly little argument about the fate of humanity. Demis Hassabis, a leading creator of advanced artificial intelligence, was chatting with Elon Musk, a leading doomsayer, about the perils of artificial intelligence.

They are two of the most consequential and intriguing men in Silicon Valley who don’t live there. Hassabis, a co-founder of the mysterious London laboratory DeepMind, had come to Musk’s SpaceX rocket factory, outside Los Angeles, a few years ago. They were in the canteen, talking, as a massive rocket part traversed overhead. Musk explained that his ultimate goal at SpaceX was the most important project in the world: interplanetary colonization.

Hassabis replied that, in fact, he was working on the most important project in the world: developing artificial super-intelligence. Musk countered that this was one reason we needed to colonize Mars—so that we’ll have a bolt-hole if A.I. goes rogue and turns on humanity. Amused, Hassabis said that A.I. would simply follow humans to Mars.

This did nothing to soothe Musk’s anxieties (even though he says there are scenarios where A.I. wouldn’t follow).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mars is already the only planet in the universe inhabited solely by robots.

And just in time, Disneyworld announced plans to replace humans with sentient robots.

    From the cited article:

"Labeling them 'sentient' may be jumping the gun a little bit, as the idea of robot sentience is, to put it mildly, complicated. But the creations are slated to have 'cameras and sensors' that let them 'make on-the-fly choices about what to do and say,' the Times reported."

"jumping the gun..."  The Cat?  No way!

You shake its hand. If it does a garmie feel-up, it’s a Mormon.

This sounds like a dorm room bull session, except the bull slingers have money and are self-impressed.

We went to the moon on slide rules, a few large room size computers and some very rudimentary digital hardware on the mission vehicles themselves. That was 1969, just over 50 years ago.

Now we have bombs that can be steered, planes that can be flown remotely, vehicles that can drive themselves, cars that can parallel park themselves, phones that recognize faces, surveillance cameras that can recognize faces. Robots are in fact exploring Mars. The world really can’t function without the internet anymore, and your car probably has a half dozen computers.

That was all accomplished in half a century. Yes, some of the capabilities are pretty rudimentary still, but where will they be in another 50 years?

It was only 70 years ago that we started to figure out how DNA worked, and now we can program mRNA to custom create proteins via vaccines.

So Elon with his toy robot that exists only in PowerPoint so far, is somehow going to protect humanity from progress? Yeah, right,

They're just a lot more accurate now.

the ones where the Japanese put wings and an engine on the bomb and put a human pilot on board were pretty accurate. Problem was, the pilots had mothers, who objected. Nobody cares if a computer gets destroyed.

Remember in the pre-computer days when we had a half million US soldiers in Vietnam. The fact that all our serious weapons are computerized now is how we can fight an Afghanistan or Iraq war with at most a few tens of thousands of troops. War, at least on our side, is mostly a very very expensive video game.

We still lose the wars, but lose far fewer soldiers, and a lot more money, in the process. I guess that's progress.

Any day now, someone from the future is going to return to Regina, Canada, most likely around 1965, in order to eliminate Maye Haldeman before she can meet and marry Errol Musk!  I know this sounds crazy, but . . .

OMG, Canada is responsible for Elon and Ted Cruz? The US should demand reparations.
