"The B.C. government has announced a plan to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for anyone who wants to attend a concert, sporting event, movie, restaurant, nightclub, casino or fitness class.

The new "B.C. vaccine cards" will be implemented on Sept. 13, Premier John Horgan and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry told reporters on Monday.

"Getting vaccinated is the way forward through this pandemic," Horgan said.

Initially, eligible British Columbians will require proof of one dose of vaccine. By Oct. 24, two doses will be required. The cards will be required for a wide range of non-essential recreational and social activities."

I'm surprised as so far they've tried to avoid being perceived as bringing the hammer down.

But I'm happy too because as soon as they relaxed the mask mandate a couple of weeks ago a lot of people were out and about without using one at all (eg: in grocery stores), although staff everywhere still wore them. I didn't really get the point there. And in some geographic areas the numbers of cases quickly went way up and they had to close back down. That's what everybody's trying to avoid because there's a way we can still move forward but with caution, slow and easy to maintain the progress we've made.

I'm vaxxed but still don't want to go into crowded situations such as sporting events. It's just not worth the risk to me.

You're only as safe as the most reckless person you cross paths with. I met my sister and a friend of hers for coffee a couple of weeks ago. I mentioned that it was the first time I had been out in public with others for a social occasion without my mask and I really enjoyed it. Only to find out later that my sister's friend wasn't vaxxed. I thought that was really rude of her in the first place but exceptionally so when she didn't say anything after I commented about being happy to feel OK about being maskless for that get-together. And we were there for a good long while chatting and laughing.

I felt that just for one moment/one occasion I wasn't as cautious as usual and look what happened. I had a week+ of anxiety afterwards until I was sure she hadn't inadvertently infected us.

I'm not going overboard with precautions, like wanting to wear a mask for the rest of my life, but until they get the delta variant etc under control I want to do what I can to supplement the protection I've got from the vaccine.

Public Health has just announced today a mask mandate in school for grades 4-12. Parents have certainly been anxious about sending the kids back, to crowded conditions and questionable ventilation, including a lot of portables here in B.C.

Generally, people are compliant and understanding of the precautions. We do have some demonstrations against. Often some of the demonstrators are rude or worse to police who are working crowd control. To me, that doesn't say much for their position or their approach.

I'm lucky I was working from home before COVID and so it continues.

Yeah. Also happy I'm not choking to death in an ICU somewhere from a potentially preventable illness.

It's good to hear that there is still some sanity in the world. Common sense, it isn't that common these days.

I have a "Pass sanitaire" or Health Pass issued by the French Social Security system. I have to show it if I want to go to a restaurant, cinmea, theatre, etc. All it consists of is a QR code on my phone in the official AntiCovid app, indicating that I've been vaccinated twice and the type of vaccine (Moderna in my case).

I can't understand how this might reduce my freedom (which is mainly curtailed by lack of funds ;-).

Back here in the US, Delta just announced an increase in health premiums for unvaccinated employees. Unvaccinated people might start getting smarter after it hits their pocket book.

Now if only Canada can open the border checkpoints so their Citizens who show proof of vaccination/negative tests can come to the US.

The WalMart in our area(close to the Border) has lost more than 52% of its total business once the border closed.

Canadians would come down with vans, trucks & trailers and load up before going back home.

A lot like our US folks driving North to get prescription medicines.

The Canadian government opened the border to United States citizens and permanent residents on August 9.

There are requirements for entry:

1. Proof of vaccination (2 doses) of an approved vaccine, the 2nd one done at least 14 days prior to arrival.

2. Have a negative COVID-19 test 72 hrs taken (in US) before arrival.

3. Must be residing in America and be travelling from there.

4. Submit required information via ArriveCAN (including vaccine confirmation).

5. Be admissible under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (of Canada).

6. Be asymptomatic.

7. Take a COVID test if requested.

The US government is keeping the border closed to Canadians until further notice (to be revisited in 30 days).

Canada has no power (other than perhaps diplomacy) to open the US border.

But if the Simpsons can do THAT to Australia. . .

The first two or three years are spectacular. Thereafter the law of entropy takes over.

There was a point at which the show made fun of some European country, and that nation took umbrage. To which the Simpsons writers laughed and said, did you see what we did to Australia??

Something about a boot.

You come down here and steal all our dry wall jobs. Force your ways and culture on us and don't even try to speak our language eh. Some Canadians even surgically try to alter themselves in a futile attempt to try to blend in. I'm onto you!

One of my mission areas was a town called Cornwall, in Ontario. During a branch meeting one Sunday, one of the members mentioned a "fillum." I thought, WTH is a "fillum"? Turns out he was talking about a movie, or "film." Never heard that anywhere else.

My sister has lived in the USA for 20+ years. Her voice sounds different to me now but it's funny - she actually sounds English (we have UK roots), not American. I guess her American friends think that's how a Canadian sounds, but not really.

I find that people just one province over from me here in B.C. (Alberta) sound a bit country-ish. Then the obvious when you get all the way over to Quebec where French is the language of choice and it's their English that is accented. Native English-speakers I've known there speak much better French than many of us further west. When I lived in Quebec for a year, some French folks would wince at my "English" (Canadian) accent stumbling over the French.

Then, of course, there's the provinces further east where they have very distinctive accents (Newfoundland for instance).

Which one of us sounds "Canadian"? :)
