Dear You Dirty Desert Rat,
I love words, and I love playing with them. Few people acknowledge how ineffective words are with regard to what they are designed to do. I can say this without reserve with regard to English and Spanish. For whatever reason, I choose to laugh all I can, which I believe puts me in a tiny minority of human beings. To which I say, "ha ha!"
"Stick the landing" is a phrase created by English-speakers involved in a form of exhibitionist gymnastics who want to communicate a short version of: "When you make your dismount from whatever gymnast apparatus you are using, keep your feet together and land on both feet, with a slight flexing of the knees, without moving or shuffling either foot, then as you straighten your legs, tuck in your tush, stick out your chest and abdomen while making an outward sweeping motion of your straightening arms, with the now straight arms held extended straight away from your shoulders at about 30 to 35 degree above horizontal. Hold that pose for five seconds, then rotate to your left 90 degrees, strike the pose again, then swivel 180 degrees, repeat the pose and then exit the platform."
As in instances too numerous to count, the shorthand version becomes primary, much to the dismay of those who've never heard the proper explanation. Once they learn what it stands for, they usually get on board and add to the chorus, "Oh, wow, she stuck the landings!"
Having it whispered in your ear, "OMG, you stuck the landing!!", during coitus . . . Priceless!
