On Facebook there was a post about the "Church of Jesus Christ of East Bumrush County" (name has been changed to protect the innocent.)

It seemed like a Mormon posting with sister missionaries pictured so I checked it out. Sure enough it was Mormon.

Why are they calling it the "Church of Jesus Christ of East Bumrush County" and not the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints"?

Are they dropping the "Latter-Day Saints" part as an attempt to mainstream?

I think "Latter-day Saints" was added -- after JS finally stopped fiddling with the name -- because there was already a Church of Jesus Christ.

You will notice The Brethren, those inspired leaders - have also started using The Church of Jesus Christ on their internet sites.

That is the legal name of another church - so deceptive practices are still the norm.

Yes, another church owns that name. Of course, the Mormons could always make that church an attractive financial offer.

Someone sees "Church of Jesus Christ of East Bumrush County" then arrives on Sunday only to see the "...Latter Day Saints" on the sign out front.

"D'oh! D@mn Mormons. Fooled me again."

Odds are good that the "Latter Day Saints" letters on the front of the building will soon be collector's items and are already in their own latter days so to speak. Replace them with the name of the town added to title, and all is well, all is well.

Who knows? Me? Just speculating.

Russ wanted to be the Church of Jesus Christ so badly but couldn't do it because somebody owns the title like BoyddKKK pointed out. This is worse than being IZOD and Ralph Lauren owns the word "Polo."

So adding the town the ward is located in lets them get kinda close to Rusty's goal without the infringement. My guess is the change will be very subtle and one day the ward house will just be missing the letters and nobody will know why. Sort of like how Mormons can't remember why they used to not let Blacks have the priesthood.

The crosses won't appear for another ten to fifteen.

Kinda like that old Amway "bait and switch" meeting invitation.

Actually, I think I attended GC there decades ago when it used to be picked up on the stake satellite dish.

Lol, as I recall I had been working outside in the heat and was all sweaty and stinky sitting there on a fold-up metal chair wishing I wasn't there or at least had a chance to go home first.

Russ wants to drop the LDS the name and is working towards that goal.

However he's living on borrowed time and the next Pres will reinstate LDS if needed or strengthen it use and just say Russ was speaking as a man and not as the prophet.

Wow, this must be very disruptive for the faithful. Is it purposeful to change members' outlook in order to mainstream their faith -- to make them more "Christian"?

I suppose leadership can just couch it in terms of missionary outreach in order to grease the skids.

The thing is, the Book of MORmON church could actually drop the Latter Day Saint part of their name with out completely destroying their divine authority claims, which they can not do relative to their mighty Book of MORMON which is what they'd really like to dispense with.
