Something about this song is especially beautiful as of late.

“No toil or labor fear”

I know the journey is different for many of us and yet also many of us have had a similar journey and I do assert that there is beauty.

For me institutional evil and individual evil are fascinating—and the LDS Church has beautiful, long-suffering, hopeful people that do not see the institution as it is—-but for what they want it to be.

To quote a great intellectual

Fascinating.

I was thinking similarly yesterday, Good people in various churches yet those churches are very bad. The catholics are the quintessential example and have similar problems to the mormons, Many are moral and do their best in life yet they've got this strange leadership with seems to attract perverts, I could be wrong but all those cardinals don't seem quite right to me, and the pope doesn't even seem to be willing to stand up against the bad things in society (he and nancy pelosi even have a recent photo where they are embracing, lol!)

The Men leading religion today are just bad.

I'm not exactly an apologist for Roman Catholicism, and a religious institution that demands celibacy of any post-pubescent segment of its membership (including clergy) is asking for trouble, but how many cardinals have you actually met, mR? Does Nancy Pelosi truly represent to you the epitome of evil>

Have you ever tried celibacy? I mean voluntarily.

Voluntary celibacy is fine -- to each his or her own -- but requiring it of clergy is insane.

I'm not sure why anyone would care, but I haven't been celibate (minus a few months when each child was in utero and during the post-natal interval) for awhile.

LW, should I keep a diary so that I can give you more precise data?

I kept a diary in 1980, while in the throes of a passionate affair with an employer.  When it came time to go out on my own, she was very helpful, clean, courteous, kind, and reverent.

There were no details, just the date, time, and place.  Seriously, that was all!

There's a lot more to the story, but modesty (alas, a complication of my innate delicacy) prohibits me from divulging any more of the tale.

Holy crap, that was forty-one years ago!  My, how the times does fly!!

A strong woman who won't bow down to macaRomney's idols and whose name ends in a vowel?

Of course she's the epitome of evil.

Based on that definition, we should consider you the epitome of evil ;-)

Who prefers ep-ah-tome over eh-peh-to-me?

I gotz ta know!!

My high school health science teacher preferred EP/uh/tome. She also pronounced gonorrhea as though it were spelled gongorrhea, then became enraged because the students all laughed whenever she said it. She mistakenly believed we thought the disease itself was funny. It was only her pronunciation of it that was hysterical to us. In her day, such words were probably never spoken aloud, though anyone with even a basic grasp of phonics should have known it wasn't pronounced GONG/gur/RHEE/uh.

Thank you, [|].

I aspire to the title of Epitome of Evil but frequently fall short, so for now I am only the Ineffable Bitch (a title bestowed upon me by EOD's smarter cousin).

Apparently religious leaders should not meet those some might consider "sinners". Christianity is all about engagement with sinners, a category is sees as not exempting anyone. Even you MacaRomney.

Such a rousing tune.

I just familiarized myself with the lyrics again. What a difference a day (or a few decades) make. Beautiful words and sentiments well crafted but when you really look the whole song condenses down to "Do what we say with a smile on your face or no heavenly reward for you!"

It's a pep talk to keep the 'little people from the village' in place.

the x-rated version. Brings a whole new meaning to the words "Come Come"

Beautiful? Hughht-

It has people Looking For Something...

They'll either find it on earth,
While they are alive.......
Or when they leave their body-

PROBLEM IS they are searching for TRUTH
BUT, LDSc MISSleaders say They've already found it; they have it; they can STOP SEARCHING.

Stop participating in Normal Life
So, they relax, and stop living FULLY
Assume the "beauty"/ truth has been found
And they don't have to make it, moment by moment

Beauty All Around... But, how about making it?
Make Beauty. Make Love. Make REALITY-
By discovering who they truly are
Not presuming everything's written

Songs are only songs...
Living the words is more fun

Of course criticism of the institutional evil is legitimate.

There were also real people—my ancestors, maybe yours.

Who got on boats to The United States.

Walked through hostile territory, temporarily settling along thr way to get to The Wilderness.

Baring and burying along the way.

Just a very human experience and also a very American experience.

I would imagine very real people find heart in these words and music and that is beautiful to me. No one needs to remind me of the institutional and individual swirling around those trials and trails. They are very much there too, but do not discredit the beautiful things that happened as well. They do demonstrate once against desperation can be exploited by the worst of people and institutions. Best to remember this in modern times—people have not changed that much since then.

My dad, not a distant ancestor, got on a plane (not a boat) to travel from the UK to North America. He landed in New York, a fact I was unaware of until recently. I was so surprised that I never heard this interesting detail before. Then he trekked up to Canada and settled in Beautiful British Columbia, for which I have always been grateful. All my cousins on both sides have stayed in the same towns where my parents grew up. I feel fortunate to have grown up in Canada. Although the cousins get to much more easily and frequently travel Europe so there is that.

Just wanted to say that the travel and the method are more than "a very American experience". Common to emigrants from many and diverse places.

"To quote a great intellectual"

Like Walt Disney: "Whistle while you work". It's all good in God's sweatshop.

I like this one:

"We'll sing and we'll shout with the armies of heaven"

Wait, Heaven has an army? No wonder Jesus looks like Rambo.
