Of their access to the Temple?

Does TSCC wait for a guilty verdict before demoting or excommunication?

I’d like to know what it would take for TBM colleague to be kicked out of TSCC. He did some pretty crummy things.

    I'm still a member, so ...

The important question is, 'does his/her bishop know?'

And even then, if he or she is paying a lot of tithing and displays a nice lifestyle, a person with authority over your miscreant would be prone 'to work with' him or her. Virtually no sin is so great that the image of that saint, and the church, need to suffer. If it can be kept out of the news media, why rock the boat?

Even though a disfellowshipped or excommunicated member is supposed to keep on paying tithings, a lot of times they don't and that is of great concern to the church.

When it comes to the day-to-day practice of mormonism, no amount of cynicism is too great.

He told his bishop the state the crimes happened in. Now he’s in a western state and a new ward.

Well, I may be wrong! Those woeful words, "I assumed..."

I found this on the church website's tech section:

Q:  ...As a bishop, I am working with a former member of the church.  She was not excommunicated, but did have her name removed ... She has been attending church with her new husband, who is a member.  She wants to know if she can pay tithing now. Thanks

A:  Reading through Handbook 1, I only see a prohibition of paying tithing for excommunicated members.

    https://tech.churchofjesuschrist.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22837

I've been casting about, looking for more detail, and will continue to look, but the notion that the church would turn down free money because of the person's status is startling.  I get where they'll turn down tithes on gambling winnings, and money earned via Ponzi schemes, etc., but I can't wrap my head around them turning down 10% of a guy's salary who was kicked out for adultery, while he's working his way back in...

According to TSCCs handbook, excommunicated people are not allowed to pay tithing

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/general-handbook/32-repentance-and-membership-councils?lang=eng#title_number2

Section 32.11.4

"Those whose Church membership has been withdrawn may not enjoy any privileges of membership.
.
.
.
They may not pay tithes and offerings."

For those who have been disfellowshipped "They are encouraged to attend Church meetings and activities if their conduct is orderly. They are also encouraged to pay tithes and offerings."
Section 32.11.3

In the case mentioned in your post, if she had been excommunicated, I imagine TSCC would gladly allow hwr to pay tithing through her husband.

So I could have boosted my income by 10% just by getting excommunicated? Why didn't anyone tell me?

You could have boosted your income by 10% by just not paying tithing.
NO excommunication needed.

Here's a Reddit topic from three years ago where it's mentioned that the church won't accept tithes from an excommunicant...

And no one contradicts it.

But I could not find a quote to that effect on the regular church website, mormon.org (ha-ha!)

So I guess excommunication is designed to completely cut you off from ghawd and all possible blessings.  I wonder what's the longest an ex'ed member has lived after that verdict?

But will the church accept cash donations from a member convicted of counterfeiting money?

Who cares? Do you wish that on him or not? I personally wouldn’t care.

A TR is easier to have invalidated than ones membership. You can lose, not get renewed, or even never have a TR and still be an active, “full faith and fellowship” member.

Having your membership sanctioned will cancel your TR, but the reverse is not true. Not having a valid TR does not tell you anything definitive about the person’s membership status.

I seem to recall that TRs are invalidated electronically now. I can't imagine that there is any way for interested members of the public to tell whether a TR has been revoked or not, except perhaps for the gossip mill.

As for church discipline, that would be up to individual bishops and stake presidents. And as we all know, that's a crap shoot.

'Crap' being the operative word.

I suppose there are many kinds of indirect, immature, passive, mormonish ways to find out. Or one could just ask the person in question. Or just let go of it and move on to more important things.

According to the bootlegged copy of the Handbook of Instructions from the 90s, that was the stated policy. Who knows what it is now.
