There are several answers to that question. First, people trust their own beliefs over factual information. Second, if you are part of the story, you generally wwant the media to tell the story from your perspective and are disappointed when the media doesn't do that (this has happened in my family). Third, there have been "fake" (made-up) stories that have appeared in powerful newspapers from time to time. The one that comes immediately to mind was one written in 1977 supposedly about a disco addict. The story was the basis for the song "Stayin' Alive," written and performed by the Bee Gees, but the story turned out to have been completely made up.

You can't rehabilitate anybody unless they actually want to be rehabilitated. If you say you want to be rehabilitated but then doubt my intentions when I try to rehabilitate you, then maybe you really don't want to be rehabilitated at all; rather you wish to confirm your previous biases. And if that's all you're looking to do, then I will most likely never be able to rehabilitate you--at least not until the time that you come to doubt your beliefs, if that time ever comes.
Don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to be cruel here. I'm just letting you know that if you strongly believe something to be true even if all of the available facts says it isn't true, then there is very little, if anything, that I can do that will change your mind.

No. But aall of us (or nearly all of us) have strong beliefs about the world around us, and for most of us, changing strongly held beliefs in the face of new facts is a very tall order indeed.
I should also note that for most people, worrying about what is and isn't true often comes second to surviving and thriving in society. Nowadays, most people are so busy trying to make a living and raise families that they don't really have the time to examine their own beliefs, let alone seek out facts that might show those beliefs to be untrue.
