They are thief's! They steal my oranges and lemons. And even so, they don't eat the whole fruit, just enough bites to make it unappetizing for me.

I can't put a pocked-cover over them, as the trees are too big to do this.

Any suggestions?

(No dogs, please.)

Give them their own food. I have some bird feeders set out, but underneath I put a mixture of dried corn, bird seed, peanuts, and dried cranberries for the squirrels and other critters (deer, rabbits, groundhogs, etc.) The squirrels don't bother the bird feeders if I leave something out for them. And making my own mix is cheaper than buying a pre-made mix.

If you have squirrels, you are blessed.

Buy your lemons in a grocery store like God intended. ;)

Here in the Ozarks, they hunt them and eat them.

I have some squirrels that taunt me. Last year they ate my newly planted hostas and some other vegetables and flowers. I made a mixture of peppermint extract and cayenne pepper to spray around certain (nonedible) plants which kept them away.

I can't imagine how to protect a lemon tree from them. They bury nuts around in my yard. There are many old trees in my neighborhood with squirrel nests. They are here to stay so I plan on sharing with them. I do enjoy watching them. I don't wish any harm to them.

Sorry I can't offer any help.

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions--they came just in time.

Today, when I went out side to sit in my plastic chair under my orange tree, I found one of the theafs sitting on MY chair!

It didn't bother to run away, it just stared at me waiting for ME to go away!

Humph.

I wish I had chipmunks. They have largely vanished in the Sierra Nevadas.

Air Rifles work well.
pyramydair.com is just one of many sites specializing in them.

Have eliminated pest animals for our government and know there are air/spring/gas ram pellet rifles to take animals from nuisance birds to Bison. You get what works.

Some have shrouded barrels so the sound of the pellet hitting the squirrel will louder than the shot.

Have taken swimming muskrats(road damage control) up to 100 yards away with head shots.

Some of them have magazines that will hold 10-12 shots - fast repeating for follow up shots to finish an animal or take his buddies who don't flee when he is first hit.

They work - very well. Best of all they are NOT firearms an ammunition is easy to get.

If I had to pick only 1 to keep - it would be my Air Arms TX200 MkIII - extremely accurate and absolutely beautiful. British, quite and deadly. Spring powered, single shot - you use a scope. Nothing within 50 yards is safe if I go after them - assuming I shoot game of the size it is good for. If I were buying again, after decades of pest animal eradication - this would be the pellet rifle I would have.

Good luck with your squirrel problem.

Get a Gamon 1000 FPS pellet gun. If your eyesight isn't so great, get the one with the scope. Happy hunting.

I've seen animals with pellets galore in their bodies, struggling to live in pain. No thanks. Be kind.

Squirrels are natures little jerks. They don't respect property and people's boundaries. We had a squirrel named Bob that lived under or step for a number of years. We would leave food out for him and even gave him his own squirrel bowl. He was not appreciative. He would eat the food, then go dig in our garden. We even planned an intervention, but he never showed.
