Gerardo of Mormon Stories scores a 2022 top ten exmo zinger quote when at minute 2:17:15 he summarizes how Joseph Smith's treasure digging protocols permeate Mormonism even to this day.

"So you're saying that The Covenant Path is a life long treasure dig?"

I didn't watch the video but I'm obsessed with the idea. It is so true. The covenant path starts by looking for treasure in the temple and then finding it all over Mormonism.

They paid a lot of money for that treasure dig. They better find something.

Guys, you are so close. The treasure keeps moving away from you. You'll probably need to sacrifice, like give me more money or a teenage daughter.

When did "covenant path" enter Mormon lexicon?

I left the church in the 70s and there's a lot of new jargon.

Victor L. Ludlow, then religion professor at BYU-Provo, in a March 9, 2004 BYU–Idaho (formerly Ricks College) Devotional with the ridiculously long title 'Covenants: Our Bond with the Divine | Helping Us "Out of the Pit"' uses the phrase "the covenant path". However, it has to be noted that this is one of 160+ times that the word "covenant" appears in the talk. The noun-noun phrases beginning with "covenant" in the talk include:

• covenant act
• covenant agreement
• covenant arrangement
• covenant ceremony
• covenant children
• covenant commitments
• covenant community
• covenant contract
• covenant document
• covenant elements
• covenant gateways
• covenant incentives
• covenant Israelites
• covenant making
• covenant model
• covenant opportunities
• covenant ordinance
• covenant path
• covenant patterns
• covenant people
• covenant promises
• covenant relationship(s)
• covenant rewards
• covenant teachings

(Incidentally, this sure feels like a form of brainwashing to me.)

Rosemary M. Wixom, Primary General President, on March 12, 2013 gave a talk at BYU-Provo titled "The Covenant Path".

Then, Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, used the same phrase in a talk "Daughters in the Covenant" given in the April 2014 General Women's Meeting.

So, yes, it's new jargon that post dates my departure from the church, and you can almost guarantee that it was test-marketed to be another way to reemphasize the need to go to the temple which is the hook for getting more tithes.

Tyson

Hey Tyson Dunn, thanks for the research on The Covenant Path. Ludlow was like a pile driver pounding "covenant" into the brains of his listeners and readers.

Related to this theme how about a new name for Relief Society?

"The Covenant Coven" with Elizabeth Montgomery as Honorary President.
