That reminded me of my abusive wife threatening me with divorce if I ever shared my doubts with our kids.

That scene brought back bad memories for me. My ex told me she had lots of friends (Attorneys) in the church would help her, "Make my life a living hell". My response? You've already made my life a living hell.

My son-in-law's (soon to be ex SIL)father was the same way.

The son-in-law's mother was doing research and finding out that TSCC was a lie. The father got into big fights about it with her and told her he would divorce her if she kept investigating.

She stopped investigating and they moved to a small town in Utah.

He had total control of the purse strings and that is why she capitulated, because she would've been kicked out and homeless.

His sons are the same as him and it worked out perfect for them, except for one thing: Our daughter has a career and independence so she was able to tell son in law to go pound sand.

The truth is ugly most of the time; nobody wants to see the ugliness.

My mom had a copy of the Tanner's book in the late '70's (I think it had a blue(?) cover), and the way it was printed makes me think it would be easy for TBM's to dismiss it as tinfoil hat stuff without even reading it: since the Tanner's dealt with a lot of microfilm the fonts were small and had a sort of "printed in a garage conspiracy theory" look to them.
After she died and I was packing up her books, it was gone, and I think to this day that my TBM brother snagged it and tossed it.

I think their book The Changing World of Mormonism is an encapsulation of MSOR. It covers the essential points in a more readable format.
