I was just watching the BBC's Antiques Roadshow and someone brought in a pocket watch with masonic symbols and it included a beehive.

NO. Joseph had the beehive symbol first. The word "Deseret" means honey bee and symbolizes industry. And since it comes from the Book of Mormon it most certainly pre-dates the Masons.

Is a beehive like the Hotel California: you can check in but you can never leave?

For a church that doesn't want symbols or pictures in their chapels, they sure cling to masonic symbols like the beehive, compass, rule and square.

God forbid a Mormon should wear a necklace with a little cross pendant, but masonic symbols stitched into their underwear is a-okay. Cross = bad. Rule, square and compass = good.

The Mormon/Masonic all-seeing-eye is the one that used to give me the creeps when I was a child. Thought that eye was looking right at me.

I toured a former Masonic temple that is now a hotel, and I saw much that is familiar from Mormonism. Joseph Smith must have thought, why reinvent the wheel?

When I was a young lad of 7 years, we were visiting a ward in Ogden utah. The sunday school lesson was on obedience and also the need to be baptised.

The beehive was used as an example of obedient church members working together for mutual benefit.

At the end of the lesson the teacher asked if we'd all raise our hands and promise to be good worker bees, obey the commandments and get baptised.

Well, I refused to raise my hand. After multiple questions of why I wouldn't be a good worker bee the unsuspecting teacher from the "big city" finally asked the shy, obstinate visiting country boy just what he wanted to be then.

I looked her in the eye and said I want to be the drone.

So she said why the drone.

My matter of fact answer. "All he has to do is lounge around, eat honey and have lots of sex with the queen. Plus since he's married to the queen he's the king."

I was sent out into the hall while the teacher performed damage control.

When the teacher complained to my folks my Dad burst out laughing. My mother was not amused as it was her old home ward. Dad and I were in the dog house for at least a week.
