Hopefully, this won't happen.

But this is the reality of making religious laws the law of the land.

Think well upon it.

A woman in Sudan has been sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, the first known case in the country for almost a decade.

Maryam Alsyed Tiyrab, 20, was arrested by police in Sudan’s White Nile state last month.

Tiyrab says she is appealing against the decision. The majority of stoning sentences, which are predominantly against women, are overturned in the high court.

Campaigners worry the sentence is a sign that the military coup in October has emboldened lawmakers to roll back small gains for women’s rights made under the country’s transitional government.

The African Center for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS), based in Uganda, said the sentence violated domestic and international law and called for Tiyrab’s “immediate and unconditional release”.

The centre said the woman was not given a fair trial and was not told that the information she gave during interrogation would be used against her. Tiyrab was also denied legal representation, it said.

“The application of the death penalty by stoning for the crime of adultery is a grave violation of international law, including the right to life and the prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” the centre said.

In 2020, Sudan’s transitional government, which followed the ousting of Omar al-Bashir, announced reforms to some of its hardline criminal laws and Sharia policies. The reforms did not include stoning, but in August the country ratified the UN convention against torture. The ACJPS said stoning was a form of state-sanctioned torture and was in breach of the country’s human rights obligations.

Sadly, it's very typical of the age-old oppression of women, which was strengthened by the western patriarchal faiths.

While we can deplore this happening anywhere in the world is there an imminent threat of it happening in the western world?

There was once a tort labeled alienation of affection, under which a spouse could sue the person who 'stole' a spouse away.

As of July, 2020, Utah was one of 7 states still allowing such a suit.

I suppose that proving the aggrieved spouse already had a 'side job' would be a defense...

For that matter, what does ancient Sharia-dictated stoning of allegedly adulterous women have to do with Mormonism? Or current US politics? Is um..."anybody" anywhere suggesting we stone women nowadays (outside of a few tribal cultures)?

No, Americans don't threaten to kill women for adultery (OJ Simpson excepted), but we do threaten to kill them for other reasons.

[Actually American women killed by spouse or intimate partner is a significant cause of death for women. Pregnancy-related homicide is a leading cause of death, exceeding the number of women who die from pregnancy complications.]

https://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2022/Senate/Maps/Jul13.html#item-5

"And that brings us to Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). This weekend, a man who does not care for the progressive House member decided to stalk her residence, both on foot and in a car, while shouting things like "Go back to India, I'm going to kill you." He was arrested, jailed, and will be put on trial for making armed threats to kill and for hate crimes."

It's not just Sudan where women are in danger.

If "The Prophet" gave the order, would you kill?

Would you do anything that was asked of you?

That's the problem with religious fanatics.

The actual faith doesn't matter.

It's blind obedience to a cult or shaman or "scripture" or xoanon, or whatever.

I read "The Handmaid's Tale" in high school.

If you asked me back then, I would have never thought there was even the slightest chance of anything like that happening for real.

Now, it's a "maybe."

All because of some crazy religious fanatics who want to re-create a lost golden era that truly never existed.

Back in the late 1920s and '30s, no one thought the Nazis could possibly eliminate millions of people -- and all the talk was just rhetoric.

The world found out the hard way that it wasn't.

So, if crazy fundie Christans ever take over America, you better believe that they will try to do what they say they're going to do.

Because they're doing it now -- one step at a time.

Brigham clearly sanctioned the killing of white women that had children with the sons of Cain.
