Apparently (see r/exmormon- I can't seem to be able to copy the URL) the big dogs are meeting this morning. I predict two things: (1) The "revelation" will involve a major restructuring of LDS theology- probably relating to women and the Priesthood. (2) they will totally skirt the sexual abuse scandal(s) that instigated the special meeting.

Indeed, whatever it might or might not be, it will amount to NOTHING.

They do need to try and divert away from all the attention to their issue about child abuse, I agree. Currently on Twitter people are pointing out the church does not need an abuse hotline since people should go to law enforcement directly. Also, the church statement makes it clear (IMO) they want to evaluate what cases meet certain criteria that endangers the church with little regard for the victims.

That said, I don't expect them to do anything earth shaking. They are not capable of anything big except accumulating money, which they never announce.

To do something big doctrinally would require an official revelation from Gawd, announced at a conference or something, right? They might announce something lame like women are now allowed to change GA's diapers or something just as important.

We'll see!

I don't expect anything, as they'll try to continue to cover up child abuse in some way. They'll never go to background checks, or allow parents to be in the room for "interviews."

Given the timing, it's almost certainly about the AP story and the settlement. The money involved in the settlement is trivial for the church, so the PR issues combined with possible other future settlements must be the major concern.

Now hold on--you were right! It was about settlement.

Interesting that TSCC is all about revelation and a "living prophet", yet the living prophet never seems to go out into a quiet spot and pray and "talk to God"--he has to meet with the Board of Directors?

The LDS church always seems to look to see what the Catholic Church does to get away with things for a roadmap. They know they don't have to admit women to the priesthood until Catholics do. They know Catholics found a way to do nothing about abuse and they will too. They might express concern, then that will be the end of it-- except for developing more protections for the church and its money.

Maybe they will warn the members not to believe all the evil press says which is just trying to make the church look bad. I mean, the press still occasionally uses the pejorative word Mormon, so ignore the attempt to persecute the church.

Evidently there are rumors of more to come. The AP story was written by the same journalist who exposed the sex abuse problems in Boston's Catholic church (the story on which the movie "Spotlight" was based.)

Well, not "nothing"--the Catholic church has had to pay out $3.2 billion so far in the US, according to Reuters. No doubt the Q15 are meeting to try and figure out how they can get away for less.

Yes, I think birth control & the fit they had when 'the pill' came onto the market is a prime example;

Now, neither the RC church or ChurchCo seems to care.

That's life in the slow lane for ya.

Tomorrow on church owned KSL-TV:

Breaking news from Church Headquarters:

President Nelson - Brothers and Sisters stay on the covenant path!

President Oaks - Too many in the media are influenced by the Gay Agenda!

President Eyring - I feel overcome (breaks down sobbing)

Reporter - that's the latest!

How many GAs does it take to replace the triple-A in Rusty's lighted pen?

All of them, apparently.

Since there’s no Disability clause in the SUCKsession, Nelson, who finally admits to himself that it’s all made up, will announce his resignation / retirement...

Fundys, fearing this will end in a tell-all departure, attempt an assination

They emerge from their meeting with the declaration that members need to fast and pray for moisture (rain).

And a special request for sisters to make more donuts.

Tithing Settlement is now a ‘Mob Shakedown’

Repeating what I wrote on another thread, I'm wondering if the change has to do with maintaining LDS Inc's tax exempt status. Maybe since tithing is a requirement for temple admittance for the necessary for blessings in the next life, members feel pressured into paying (not donating) 10% of their income to LDS Inc. Tithing SETTLEMENT at the end of the year is to make sure the members are paying a full tithe. If they don't pay a full tithe they aren't in good standing with LDS Inc and they can't go through the temple.

Maybe the IRS views tithing as income to the Mormon church members feel forced to pay. If tithing settlement is now called a declaration, which really means an announcement, maybe members can now just declare the amount of tithing they are willing to pay: "I declare that I will pay 1% in tithing because that is all that I can afford." That way it doesn't look as if they feel forced to pay 10% of their income to LDS Inc. Tithing will start to look more like a voluntary donation, which it's currently not. At least when I paid I felt it was obligatory.

LDS Inc. was in the news, just before the pandemic hit. A whistle blower exposed the $100 billion pile of cash just sitting there, not being used for charitable purposes, etc. Maybe the IRS is doing some investigating...Maybe Nelson and others are trying to make subtle changes to keep the cash flowing in...
