Lying appears to be in vogue lately. The bigger the lie with associated hypocrisy, the more people hunker down to defend it. When we are kids singing about honest Mormon boys, we had no clue, did we!

Even as a nevermo, I feel that sentiment has a broad application. It's like those in power often take the rest of us to be chumps. Sincerity and an effort to do right are qualities of the little people in their eyes. No wonder they encourage confession and repentance. That benefits them, not us.

Hinkley gets one point for not stating he was a prophet, only saying he was sustained as such.

He said that on national TV fully aware that claiming to be a prophet of God would make him look like the buffoon he is. His faux humility attests to his sense of public relations and nothing more.

Meanwhile he told his followers that he was a prophet every time he sat in GC and let others call him such, or let the assembly vote to sustain him in that role. Please don't let him off the hook for that.

For what it's worth, I think Hinckley was among the coldest and most cunning of modern LDS prophets. There was far more calculation in him than empathy.
