I'm taking a break from mocking the Lord's anointed to list secular tunes that could pass for having a spiritual message.

I'll start with Steve Miller's Serenade.

I also like Gerry Rafferty's The Ark

I second EOD's recommendation of Sarah Barilles' "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road". Haunting.

Sir Elton himself praised her, saying she performed the song better than he did.

Lottie loves music.

ETA: Back when I was but a wee lass, just before the fall of the Soviet Union, my family were in Moscow on parental business and were given tickets to see the Kirov Ballet perform the Rite of Spring. The director had chosen a retro choreography based on Martha Graham's work.

It was life changing.

I should add something that caffiend, the Boner, and other long-haired music freaks know: Messiaen wrote and performed his quartet in a Nazi concentration camp.

The commandant appreciated music and allowed him and some Jewish musicians to put on a concert before the camp guards and the prisoners. I believe that happened in 1941.

In any case, a Jewish composer writing about the End of Time in a Nazi concentration camp is about as mystical as one can get.
