I say:

"I believe that every person has a right to choose for themselves. I personally do not like organized religion." On occassion for those who knew I was part of the local culture, they say, "You really do not mean that?"

Of which I look them squarely in the eye, with a kind smile and say, "Yes I do!"

Which is correct as it pertains to the quotation marks and a period.

"I am happy and I'm free."

or

"I am happy and I'm free".

"I am happy and I'm free." is correct. The period goes inside of the quotation marks.

Exception... if your quote is followed by a reference (e.g. [4] where [4] is a reference to a footnote) the period should follow the reference outside of the quotation marks.

Not if you are British. Then the standard is "I am happy and I'm free".

Or better yet, 'I am happy and I'm free'.

It depends on the circumstances.

My favorite thing to tell Mormons is that I'm an apostate.

In polite conversation I'll say something like, "I have no defined religious beliefs."

If a zealot is being zealous, I might proclaim myself a staunch atheist.

Whatever is honest and appropriate. Or intentionally inappropriate, if the desire so strikes.

Generally when someone asks that type of question it is not out of curiosity but rather out of gleaning information in order to judge.

I like going by apostate agnostic adulteress. I like to go for the shock factor. I was such a good little mormon girl that I wear these labels with pride.
