Police in Uganda have arrested a Liberian missionary from the Church of Mormon who they accuse of faking his own kidnap and demanding a 74m Ugandan shilling ($20,000; £15,000) ransom.

The Territorial Police in Greater Masaka, arrested the Liberian National Taulus Zanto, a 20 year old, male adult and an accomplice, for staging a fake kidnap.

The head of the missionary at the church where he was volunteering reported his kidnap on the evening of 2 January and a search for him began, police said.

The police spokesman alleges that the missionary’s former workmate pretended to be his abductor and made a phone call demanding ransom.

But then the missionary, along with a Ugandan, were arrested in a hideout, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement.

“The suspects are being charged with conspiracy, giving false information and demanding by menaces,” the police said.

Neither suspects have commented on the allegations.

Who did he think was going to pay the ransom? Did he realize the Mormons have money and hate bad publicity? I'd like to know where he thought the money bag source was to make it worth the risk. The article doesn't say exactly who received the demand for money.

Most missionaries would know the church doesn't. Are about them and would never pay the?ransom.

They don't even pay to ship your dead body home.
