He'd see the wealth and be proud. The doctrine was always flexible. The name of the game was to get money. His church succeeded bigly.

Mmm, I doubt it. I think old Brigham played him well. I think Brigham did the most to set the basis of what the church is now.

Or, would the church recognize joe?

He would get reported to the bishop for propositioning the Laurels.

I don't even know if more recent ones like Kimball would recognize it, let alone JS

He would be a good cellmate for Warren Jeffs.

I'm sure he would recognize all the women that were promised to him in the pre-existence to be his earthly wives.

Brigham Young and Heber C Kimball were more ruthless than Joseph Smith. Smith was a charismatic con artist making it up as he went.

Brigham wanted his own country and language. He populated his desert Zion as fast as he could abusing women and putting immigrants lives in danger getting them there as cheaply as possible.

If Joseph Smith were to return and resume leadership of mormonism, no church school female would graduate with her virginity intact.

But to be fair, JoJu would not be hostile to the gays, and there'd be nothing about public displays of gay affection in the Horror(sic) Code.

"Joseph Smith was not at all homophobic.

"In a funeral address delivered in 1843 at Nauvoo, Illinois, he gave comfort to a survivor of one Lorenzo Barns, who had died while serving a mission in Great Britain.  The Prophet noted that Brother Barns' 'very (gay) friend' was present in the congregation that day.

"Attempting to enlighten the congregation on a particular principle of the resurrection, he is quoted as saying:

" . . . to bring it to the understanding, it would be upon the same principle as though two who were very friends, indeed should lie down upon the same bed at night locked in each other's embrace talking of their love, and should awake in the morning together.  They could immediately renew their conversation of love even while rising from their bed, but if they were alone and in separate apartments, they could not as readily salute each other as though they were together . . . "

(Wilford Woodruff Journal, entry for April 16, 1843, as cited by Feliz p. 3)

So, having JoJu back in their midst would be something to behold and one could get very dizzy speculating on how things would shake out, other than everyone agreeing he'd be a total horndog.

I think JS would be kind of surprised, but I doubt of BY would be much surprised, and anyone after Wilford Woodruff (Wuff Wuff) wouldn't be surprised at all, except by the money, and maybe the lifting of the Priesthood ban.

>I don't even know if more recent ones like Kimball would recognize it, let alone JS

Oh, come on. Moving Sacrament Meeting from the evening to the daytime, and dropping Gold and Green Balls, or adopting 2 piece garments are not fundamental changes. Temples are still important. "Line of Authority" and patriarchy in general is still a thing. Everything in the Articles of Faith is still considered doctrine. Sending young men on missions is still a thing.

The furniture gets moved around, but the basic structure has hardly changed at all since 1930 or so.

He'd be horrified by the modern church but not maybe in the way some people here are.

* It has become like the Churches he abandoned.
* It takes its direction from the secular authorities.
* It isn't very mystical.
* It never has revelations etc etc.

Throw in polygamy too.

He would think the polygamist communities in Southern Utah were the natural evolution of his church. He would probably be quite pleased, except for the arrest of its President and Profit. He would probably attempt to take over and pick up where he left off…..especially with the young girls.

Bob, please be aware that 21 BYU 1970 graduates are listed in this quarter's alumni magazine ... and none of them is us!!!

Continue to hang in there, Bro. dude...

Probably a list of donors to the BYU alumni organization. Thanks for the info man, see you later.

Oops!  I was way unclear in that post...

Those 21 1970 graduates were part of the 2½ page listing of BYU alumni who have passed on to Celestial (one hopes) education programs.

I've never followed the link, but at the end of the list, the magazine says, "Visit alumni.byu.edu/obits to see an extended list of recent alumni deaths (including non-graduate alumni) along with links to memorial sites."

I assume the 21 is the CK list and the 2½ pages is the TK list. I'm impressed with BYU for being able to discern such things.

Yep, but what young girl would go for him, prophet or not - because he would be 217 years old. Wrinkle city to make Nelson & Hoax & Cry'nEyring look good.

I think the FLDS would seem familiar to him. As for the mainstream church, I think he'd have an appreciation for its financial success, but it would also seem strange to him in a lot of ways.

I’m not so sure regarding Joey’s horniness quotient (level)…

I think the operative question is: Has he matured as many or most people do as they/we age?

Or, has he remained Frozen in time & space for ages and ages, Never to grow up?

Remember, he was only 35 yrs old at death.

NO, I’m not excusing him or making him appear as a nice guy!!

The early church was no religion for old men. Obviously things have changed.

First Joseph would be appalled that his family was ousted from power.

He would immediately reinstitue the office of presiding patriarch.

He would try, though it is far too late, to reintegrate the church into the social fabric of the community.

The "Law of Sarah" would have to be restored.

He'd run for president!

He'd denounce and probably excommunicate Hinkley.

The Law of Sarah was the right of the first wife to block additional marriages. Joseph never abided by it. In fact, D&C 132 said that if Emma exercised her rights under the Law of Sarah, she would be damned.

I suspect JS would ignore it today as he did in the 1830s and 1840s.

No

He couldn't get away with ANYTHING-
He wouldn't pay tithing...
Just like he never did!

He wouldn't be happy that people had any money or free time!

He would wonder if tscc is MISLEADING people enough.

He would chaise members about their dress.

Just like Mormons always have!

> He would chaise members about their dress.

Love that misspelling.

Would JS chase members over their dresses?

Would he chaste them?

Would he chaise them in the sense of "bedding" them?

Or would he chastise them for wearing dresses that were too modest?

There are so many possibilities. . .
