Gah! They took out the offensive lyrics! What’s the problem?

In the video it sounds like folks in the stands knew the original lyrics as they rapped along with the routine.

Maybe that’s what set hair on fire. If you don’t know the song, you couldn’t be offended, but if your grandkid is with you rapping up a storm, maybe that’s an issue?

The “dance team” was the Cougarettes, who have been performing at BYU football (and basketball?) games for decades.

The Cougarettes weren’t cancelled. One performance was cancelled because of objections to the lyrics of one of the songs in their routine. The offending part of the song lyric had been left out of the performance. But there were still complaints.


The powers that be could have let the performance go on but have them remove the number from future performances. Or they could have ignored the objections and just let the artistic directors do their job.

My guess is the objections came from or had the backing of either a big money donor, or a GA.

Does the dance team dance really wear head to toe sweat pant suits as their official costume?

i've never understood a lyric in a rap song yet so don't care.

But I take major exception to those who change lyrics. This is like the movies the Mormons were having "cleaned" (or was it "sanitized"?) so they could watch them or the Lennon song where they take out the "no religion too" part. Tampering with an artist's work is disrespectful at the least and changing the meaning is basically lying.

Just don't use it at all if you find it offensive.
