https://www.thethings.com/was-ryan-gosling-mormon

“Eventually, it was his being raised Mormon that got Gosling a part that would change the trajectory of his career. His break was playing a Jewish neo-Nazi in The Believer, a role that Gosling should never have been considered for.

"I found that Jewish kids didn't know much more than anybody else," director Henry Bean said of his casting an actor who was not Jewish.

"Ryan understood something about religion. Mormonism is very demanding, and it isolates you the way Judaism isolates you. And he got all that."

One has to wonder why all of us aren't stars!

I was in a ward that Ryan's mom and sister were in. Whenever Ryan would visit, there would be great excitement. The Youth girls all had his name scribbled in their scriptures. They were all in love with him. His best friend was a primary teacher. I think he was quite amused by Ryan's fame, but Ryan was the ward celebrity and it was a big deal for them.

Just how many well-known actors were raised Mormon? It's always fascinating to read about them. All I remember off-hand is Aaron Eckhart, who even went on a mission to France. (Eventually, he became a cigar aficionado.) But I used to know several names.

Aaron is a great actor. Please tell me that he resigned, or is now just a cigar smoking mormon.

Amy Adams. She's talked about it in interviews.

Katherine Heigl - from Grey's Anatomy and other shows/movies.

From Wiki:
"Her brother's death led Heigl's Lutheran mother and Catholic father to convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Heigl, then eight, was raised in that faith."

I have uncles on my mom's side of the family who credit their "conservative Catholic values" for their business successes. They really don't believe me when I tell them that they took advantage of opportunities that were never available to others.

Membership has its privileges.
There’s definitely an advantage to being in the ‘in-group’.

I would only note that Ryan Gosling was LDS in Canada (not in southern Alberta). When you are a religious minority your religious perspective is much, much different than when you are in a dominant religion. A religious minority must make active decisions about his religious life that others may just take for granted.

Ryan as a youth and certainly his parents would have to decide: Will we be a Mormon family or not? Since Mormonism is also a cultural proposition, decisions about LDS lifestyles would not have been for a few holidays or even Sundays. They would have been deciding about Mormonism on a daily basis.

Hence, Ryan could have understood and played a role as a religious minority drawing upon personal experiences. His perspective as a Mormon would have been much, much different if he was raised in ID/UT/AZ where everybody knows that Monday evenings are FHE (whatever that is on those Church produced calendars).

To be fair, most Mormons live outside the Mormon heartland... even ones raised in the church such as Gosling.

Actually, it's a common misconception, but Ryan Gosling isn't a Latter-day Saint.

Ryan Gosling was indeed baptized and raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But currently, he does not publicly identify as a practicing Latter-day Saint. It’s a personal journey and everyone's religious experience can be very unique.

He was raised in a Latter-day Saint family, but he has stated in interviews that he identifies more as spiritual rather than belonging to a specific religion.

So, he IS a mormon!

Yes, mormon. They can try to control and shame their sheep but they will always be mormon.

Why can't you use "Mormon" like normal people?

Or like Gordon Hinckley or Tom Monson, for that matter?

Mr. The Cat, there is a new poster in town, using the screen name LDSB.

What thoughts bubble to the surface of your brain when you see LDS in a s/n?

Be honest...

You might have noticed that my post was properly placed and indented below the drive-by mormon's post, not yours. But you didn't.

Or you might have noticed that the drive-by used the Nelson Approved Church Name *four times* in five sentences, and inferred that's who I was responding to. But you didn't do that either.

You will find this board much less confusing once you understand how threads operate.

Good point, Dallin Ox. I'm guessing he was a TBM drive by.

Note: This is a copy/edit of the post by LDSB above. They are mormon, they have always been mormon and they will always be mormon. They can tell the sheep and bully the press into using The Church of Butt Ass Ugly Underwear but they will still be.... MORMON.

Don’t you love the hypocrisy?

Sure, we know what he states and many of us are in the same situation…

What does the church say? Is he a member of record?

That is an imaginative and accurate name for the church I haven't heard before. Thanks for the laugh.
