I saw the movie Elizabeth with a Muslim friend several years ago. When we reached the torture scene, she whispered in horror, “Christianity had that too? I thought it was just . . .us.”

I explained that all three Abrahamic religions have had their share of holy terror. That’s what happens when your God orders his followers to clear the land through genocide and punishes eating shellfish with death.

Not a good look.

Well, it would depend on the crime, right? I imagine that in most misdemeanors, you would be fined a certain amount with hikes in the amount fined for any subsequent violations. With felonies, I think everything is up for grabs, including every one of the possible behaviors listed by others above.

The question then becomes what would be considered a misdemeanor and what would be considered a felony. I don't exactly know the answer to that, but I suspect that most items, including practicing homosexuality and heterosexual sexual relations without being married, would be considered felonies, along with receiving an abortion. My guess is that using birth control, particularly condoms, would be considered a misdemeanor under such a regime--but hey! What do I know.

I remember a movie I saw in college that was made a few years after the end of communism in Russia called "The Chekist" about the local KGB officer in a small, regional city whose "job" was to execute people deemed by the local party committee to be "enemies of the state." The most surprising thing was how bored they were -- executing people and cleaning up the blood and body parts just got to be routine. They didn't care one way or the other, shooting people every day just wasn't exciting.


Would the fundies just get rid of people, or would they go through all the trouble to first "re-educate" people a'la "1984" as a public example and then get rid of them?

I hope we never have to find out.
