https://flatwaterfreepress.org/whos-buying-nebraska-after-shopping-spree-mormon-church-is-top-land-purchaser/

That doesn't even qualify as a trick question. You knew the answer was going to be LDS Inc.

Estimated 370,000 acres owned in Nebraska, 1.7 million acres owned nationwide.

But they are selling off land in Jackson County, MO, so the Utah saints will just have to walk to western Nebraska. Easy-peasy.

God??? After all it is his hundreds of billions and I'm sure, as is the entire membership of his one true church that, God knows best how to invest his own money to bring salvation and eternal life to the souls of his chosen and most righteous. No one should question Gods financial practices. No ones business but his own.

Oh yea, God may have changed his mind about Jackson County MO. as the gathering place and that's OK too.

The Mormons want to convert everyone to their cult. The oligarchs like Gates want a monopoly.

It’s theocracy vs monopoly.

Interesting comments after the article. As usual Mormons don't care about the financial practices of the church.
But the Mormons who comment are sure upset about being called Mormons.

Hmmm. Give them something trivial to be upset about and they won't be complaining about the big things. This seems to be an popular practice nowadays.

Give them a few years and they'll be mormons again when Rusty dies.

I wonder how much they own in any state. Who would have thought they were interested in land in Nebraska! Maybe they are buying land that is available and some of the states probably have more than others.

My concern would be what they plan to do with the land. I hate seeing all the farm land being purchased unless they plan on farming it. Any of those who are buying up a lot of land like Gates.

If I were still mormon, the large amount of money they have and where they spend it would bother me a lot. Nobody in my family pays tithing anymore EXCEPT my daughter. Damn.

Wonder how they do in North Dakota where it is illegal for Corporate ownership of farms and ranches - other than closely held Family corporations who farm and ranch.

No Monsanto or big Corporate farming and ranching in that State.

A lot of family farms. Friends there farm and ranch and like not having the big outfits coming in to screw up the State. Would MFMC come in and start suing the State over it?

The Chinese bought 300 acres of North Dakota farmland near the Grand Forks Air Force Base, which houses and supports siloed ICBM missles. This land was also on the flight path of the Chinese spy balloon.

You managed to pack three major errors into two sentences, so you get points for efficiency.

For starters, 300 acres is a backyard garden by North Dakota standards. Three thousand acres is a serious farm.

The missile mission at the GFAFB ended in 1991 with the SALT (START II?) treaty. The last silo was emptied and imploded in 1998. The current mission of the airbase is drones/recon.

As far as I can tell from looking at a map of the flight path of the Chinese balloon, it came across British Columbia, the NE corner of Washington state, diagonally across western Montana to South Carolina in an almost straight line. I doubt it got within 700 miles of GFAFB.

It did pass fairly close to Malmstrom AFB near Great Falls, Montana, which does still have some Minuteman missiles. Whoever generated that glob of misinformation that you were apparently willing to swallow whole must have gotten confused.

As for the Chinese owning 300 acres near Grand Forks, there may be a hint of truth to that. A Chinese company was planning to open a corn processing plant in or near Grand Forks. The proposal was voted down in February of this year after the Air Force objected.

ETA: the 300 acres the Chinese company owns was going to be used for industrial production rather than farming, so the anti-corporate farming laws didn’t apply.

ND does indeed have draconian restrictions on corporate farm ownership except for closely held family corporations. There was a recent referendum to repeal the law, and the referendum was soundly defeated. [Corporations desperately want the law repealed]

The legislature did water down the law a bit earlier this year, with regard to livestock operations, precisely the sort of thing LDS Inc tends to do with its land. Corporate ownership is still far too limited for LDS Inc to be interested, but corporations finally have a nose in the tent. I think the change in the ND law falls under the category of “money talks”.

My friend in NoDak like the laws keeping big Ag out of farming. Family farms are their way of life, crops and livestock. One owns a large Bison ranch. A few raise cattle and farm as well. The State is the #1 producer of wheat and at least 7 other farm products.

"Family Farm" is not a couple hundred acres but, as said above, a lot more than that. New combines and tractors cost up to a half million dollars. One friend is the 5th generation on the farm and has a Phd in some kid of genetic plant science. Was teaching at a University and decided he preferred to run the farm and apply his knowledge where he could be out in the fields producing.

Have visited a few of them and the geese, ducks, moose, elk, deer and such with a lot of ponds and lakes and few people around sure do make it nice. One positive is there are few mormons around where these guys live.

Ok Ok, give us your money so that we can hold it for God..

Yeah that's it, give it to me so that I can put it someplace safe!

What is so incredibly hilarious about Mormonism (sorry) is that the actual charity exposed from this "giving" church has got to be a somewhat tiny 0.0001% percentage point.

Missionaries pay their own way and the volunteers run things from a leadership point of view while all the church cleaning continues to be done by members.

Mathematically speaking it's great! You're charging 10% and running things on maybe 0.0001% peccent!

Given that most churches (which survive just fine on average 1-3% donations) spend half of that on salaries, the Mormon church should be doing a heck of a lot more charity than it is. The leadership has successfully bamboozled the membership into believing that the church does a lot of charity. It doesn't.

I think the church is investing in a lot of ranches because they are more difficult to track than stocks and bonds and major companies. Plus they now have to follow US law and issue quarterly reports on their publicly traded stocks and bonds, and they really hate having to issue reports to the general public - or anyone other than themselves, to be more accurate.

Because they are a nonprofit. They get away with it, because they are both nonprofit (not true) and a business.

If they are a nonprofit, Don't they have to have a listing of where the money went? All I've done is hear some CPA say that everything is accounted for.

Again, a crock.
