I used to post here a few years back as cagirl but had to reregister because I don't even have the same email anymore. But I have a question. My DIL saw a posting going around claiming the LDS church has holdings in multiple weapons manufacturing companies such as Lockheed Martin. Anyone know if this is true? Sounds probable to me.

It is true.

A list of all of Ensign peak's stock holdings

Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Martin Marietta - there may be more - I didn't go through the whole list.

Using my feelbe imagination, their priesthood-wielding stockbrokers would buy any stock that they thought was going to experience either an increase in volume* and/or higher than "normal" quarterly returns.

Again, I'm no expert, but that's how I picked Circuit City, K-Mart, Sears, Polaroid, Nokia, and Continental Airlines!

*Edited to explain that by "volume" I mean the capacity to "bloat" which everybody in the business knows means to accumulate fat profits, as opposed to skinny profits.

Don't forget your more recent investment in Twitter.

I invested a lot in the Mormon Church (tithing) and got nothing in return but the opportunity to do callings, feel guilty & promises I wouldn't burn in the hereafter..

Same with me. It's easier to make fun of EOD than to acknowledge my own stupidity.

Don't forget his extensive holdings in Bed, Bath & Beyond.

He thought it was a B&B.

BB&B closed all their physical stores and are now part of Overstock.
They are more a clearing hub for other companies. Always triple check
their prices because most of the time they are a lot higher than other
places.

Oh, my goodness -- I do as well. I have an entire file full of them. It's too bad that store is gone. There was a period of time where if you needed anything for your bed or bath, you could definitely find it there. I realize that online shopping plus the pandemic have killed a lot of stores, but incompetent management has also played a role. So many lovely stores gone due to overpaid idiots sinking the ship. Bed, Bath & Beyond, Borders, Tuesday Morning, Linens & Things, etc. And certain segments of our society whine about public school teachers. At least we are not paid millions of dollars to ruin perfectly good stores.

Ours closed a few years ago and yet when I ran into Logan a few weeks ago, there were quite a few new stores behind In & Out Burger in an old area where the last grocery store closed a few years ago. They have put in 3 stores and one is BB&B. I can't remember the names of the other two stores.

They would invest in whore houses if they thought the return on investment was high enough.
Business and money trumps all for MFMC.

They'll eventually get around to following the assignment of good-looking young ladies to temple-grounds mission to the next logical step . . .

I wouldn't classify them as weapon stocks, more as aerospace and defense.

These stocks are a staple in many investment portfolios.

Agreed. Ensign Peak is simply investing according to a standard algorithm.

Virtually anyone who has an S&P or DJ index fund in his personal portfolio or in a managed pension account "owns" those companies.

I agree. It's a standard investment portfolio with a few tweaks.

Not everything that is labeled as "defense" actually goes directly to weapons work.

People are adverse to funding basic research. Why, I don't know, but they seem to prefer *targeted* research. The most prominent example is "the war on cancer." Trying to find cures for cancer isn't easy, but you find a lot of other things along the way that solve other problems, and people get emotional about it. The same thing goes for the national laboratories. They do a lot more than just develop nuclear weapons, but that's where the money comes from.

Basic R&D in the USA gets funded through the defense budget, and the big contractors started to merge at the end of the Cold War, so now you have only a few big players left. If you are going to invest in R&D, that's where your money is going to go. The government can also cancel contracts for no reason at any time, and things have changed since the 1980s when it was almost impossible to cancel a project (the DIVAD "Sgt. York" anti-aircraft gun is a famous example).

LD$, Inc. probably doesn't care about weapons either way -- they just want a safe return on investment.
