The public reason for having an escort is so there will be someone available to answer any questions.
The private reasons are: so no one cracks a snarky joke. so no one touches anything, especially the oxen so no one sits anywhere, especially in the Celestial Room™ so no one removes their little booties.
It's bad enough letting people in who are not dressed in white and delightsome clothes, but they'll be damned if they are going to let the unwashed touch anything.
At the end of the tour, two teenage missionaries asked if we had questions. I smiled and said no. But I was walking away I thought "As you are now, I once was. As I am now, you may become."
Is it really unreasonable to want to supervise people's access to something you just spent $60-70 million on? We can talk about the waste of money or the stupidity of the whole thing, but I'd be shocked if I weren't being watched like a hawk.

The one room which was "off the temple tour" is the iniatories room. That door was unmarked meaning no label next to the door was being guarded by 3 men. The only reason that I discovered it was because I asked them if that was an emergency exit and they told me the name of the room. They not only do not want people to know about it, but it's not even labeled for TR approved members.
You could be overcome by the Almighty Awesomeness of The House of TheLard - and pass out in ecstacy or something. You might go crazy screaming 'BAPTIZE ME NOW' and they are not set up for it in there.
God works in mysterious ways and protecting you with guards/guides in the Temple is his way of showing he loves you... unless you are a NY Yankees fan - then you can piss off.
To ensure I was thoroughly confused while touring the public open house for the Nauvoo Temple. Up and down, back and forth, in and out our guide led us....I'm sure we missed some big spaces.
To this day, I am still wondering what we were NOT shown. Which also means what they didn't have to describe or be questioned about.
that one event sparked the curiosity I still have.
