Are they afraid we might enter a secret door leading to secret basements?

I, for one, have always wanted to climb around on the oxen.

People like me need to be kept in line.

We weren't supposed to climb on the oxen?

I wish my escorts were as cool as yours.

Mine drowned.

And I didn't do it. . . Really, I didn't.

Mine made me take off my red sequin high heels first.

The public reason for having an escort is so there will be someone available to answer any questions.

The private reasons are:
so no one cracks a snarky joke.
so no one touches anything, especially the oxen
so no one sits anywhere, especially in the Celestial Room™
so no one removes their little booties.

It's bad enough letting people in who are not dressed in white and delightsome clothes, but they'll be damned if they are going to let the unwashed touch anything.

I don't think my wife would like me having an escort.

Which wife are U referring to, Brad?

My spirit wives. I see them after drinking heavily.

After they drink heavily or after you do?

At the end of the tour, two teenage missionaries asked if we had questions. I smiled and said no.
But I was walking away I thought
"As you are now, I once was.
As I am now, you may become."

If you were not escorted you would steal all of the toilet paper.

That right there! Or you might make an attempt to find the non-existent cafeteria.

Creepiest thing for me at a temple open house was the teenage girls kneeling on the floor putting covers on everyone's shoes.

Yeah, that creeped me out as well. Why don't they just hand the booties to people and supervise while the tour groups put them on?

I bet someone convinced them that it was symbolic of Jesus washing the disciples feet, and would help people "feel the spirit".

Someone else suggested wadding up and throwing the used booties at suspected adulterers, but that idea was fortunately rejected.

Yes, they are paranoid that you may go off the temple tour during open house.

I did and several came running to see why I had stopped to read the door signs.

Is it really unreasonable to want to supervise people's access to something you just spent $60-70 million on? We can talk about the waste of money or the stupidity of the whole thing, but I'd be shocked if I weren't being watched like a hawk.

It's not about protecting the building but hiding the fact that people are doing weird things in it.

The one room which was "off the temple tour" is the iniatories room. That door was unmarked meaning no label next to the door was being guarded by 3 men. The only reason that I discovered it was because I asked them if that was an emergency exit and they told me the name of the room. They not only do not want people to know about it, but it's not even labeled for TR approved members.

It is for your safety.

You could be overcome by the Almighty Awesomeness of The House of TheLard - and pass out in ecstacy or something. You might go crazy screaming 'BAPTIZE ME NOW' and they are not set up for it in there.

God works in mysterious ways and protecting you with guards/guides in the Temple is his way of showing he loves you... unless you are a NY Yankees fan - then you can piss off.

Larger temples are easy to to get lost in. Most of the rooms in ours are offices which rarely get used. Typical of church bureaucracy.

You won't get any just now. Apparently all the escorts were in Davos this week servicing WEF attendees.

An escort is needed:

To ensure I was thoroughly confused while touring the public open house for the Nauvoo Temple. Up and down, back and forth, in and out our guide led us....I'm sure we missed some big spaces.

To this day, I am still wondering what we were NOT shown. Which also means what they didn't have to describe or be questioned about.

that one event sparked the curiosity I still have.
