https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2024/02/08/utah-school-board-natalie-cline-gender-basketball-threats

“Utah state school board member Natalie Cline is under fire after posting photos of a high school basketball player, questioning her gender and prompting threats against the girl.

Why it matters: Anti-transgender fervor is escalating in Utah, where lawmakers have passed laws restricting sports participation, health care and, most recently, bathroom access.

Driving the news: Cline, an elected member of the Utah State School Board, posted the photos Tuesday on Facebook, inciting a dogpile of comments identifying the girl, criticizing her appearance.

The girl is now under police protection, the Salt Lake Tribune reports, as Granite School District ramps up security at her school.
Cline removed the post Wednesday after she learned the girl was not transgender and posted a statement arguing "it is normal to pause and wonder if people are what they say they are because of the push to normalize transgenderism in our society."

The other side: The student's parents told KSL-TV they want Cline to resign.

Equality Utah, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, and state Democratic lawmakers also called for her resignation.

What they're saying: "To look at someone's outer appearance and make an assumption … based on the way someone looks I don't think is appropriate," the 16-year-old's mother said.“

Unless you are Mormon, then it’s perfectly normal to judge others based upon their most superficial appearance.

"The student in Cline’s post is not transgender. In response to Cline’s post, many of Cline’s followers left offensive and threatening comments about the student, personally identifying her and her school.

Cline later removed the post and apologized, but Granite School District has said it has had to provide security for the student because of the responses. The Salt Lake Tribune is not identifying her school to protect her identity."

"The Granite School District’s local board of education passed a resolution Friday condemning Cline’s behavior and demanding her immediate resignation.

It was one of several formal condemnations regarding Cline. The Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday issued a statement calling for her to resign, adding that it “unequivocally” condemns her “deeply troubling” actions.

The Midvale City Council shared equally strong sentiments in a public letter addressed to Cline on Friday. The city falls within the boundaries of Cline’s voting district.

The Canyons School District’s local board of education also called for a special Tuesday meeting, where board members plan to discuss adopting the same resolution against Cline that Granite’s board passed. Canyons serves some Midvale students.

The Murray School District’s board also planned to convene a special meeting Thursday with the possibility of taking similar action.

And local board members for the Jordan School District, where a portion of students within Cline’s voting district live, will also discuss a potential resolution against Cline during a study session Tuesday evening."

"Although the board does not have the power to remove Cline from her position, she can face discipline ranging from censure to or other measures, including removing her from committee assignments, prohibiting her from attending board advisory committee meetings, and prohibiting her from placing an item on an agenda."

"The Utah State Legislature is exploring whether to impeach Natalie Cline from the state Board of Education, with House and Senate leaders saying they are appalled by her social media posts that have been called "bullying" for allegedly questioning the gender of a high school student-athlete."

Imma write Cline's press release for her:

"As a person who cares deeply about the things I care deeply about, the fact that I was wrong in a particular minor point does not mean I was wrong in a general and more important point!

"Nothing I said or did changes the fact that I was 100% correct about what I was trying to say!  Facts are not important when compared to salvation and exaltation!

"I have no intention either to apologize or to resign; it is NOT my fault that the young lady is not transgender and it's her fault that she made me think she was!  That was entirely her doing!!

"I simply want what's best for the children!  Please, think of the children, and keep in mind that if I don't save them, who will?

"Plus, I'm a Relief Society President!!!"

Plus, that woman (are we sure that she's really a woman-did anyone check?) has a horrid history of homophobic behavior, always seeing "the gay agenda" and "grooming" around every corner. Her goal is to destroy public education in Utah. She shouldn't be allowed to breathe the same air as the rest of us, much less hold a position on the State School Board. What a sorry excuse of a human and a total waste of protoplasm.

"She shared a photo on her Facebook page with a picture of a pride flag in a seminary building, where students who belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can take classes during the school day. In her post, Cline showed a welcome sign at the seminary at Layton High School. It read: “If you are LGBTQIA+ welcome to seminary!”

Cline identified the school by name and wrote, “Time to make some phone calls. The world is too much with us.”

Her message followed shortly after an apostle for the LDS Church criticized members of the faith who push back against the teachings on same-sex marriage, urging instead that those in the faith take up their intellectual “muskets” to defend church doctrines.

Cline’s post caught the attention of some members of the faith who are part of the alt-right #DezNat movement. One person shared a screenshot of Cline’s post with the comment: “Time to get out our muskets.”

The leaders of the Utah State Board of Education put out their third statement condemning Cline’s words: “The board does not condone rhetoric … that inspires any type of hate speech against students.”

Cline deleted the post. But Davis School District said it had to hire additional officers to patrol around the school she named because of threats."

We see that epistemology here on RfM all the time, don't we Jesus?

"I feel very strongly about this, so I am correct. Facts be damned."

You can take the True Believer out of Mormondom, Eric Hoffer might have said, but you can't take the Mormondumb out of the True Believer.

He'll just find a new movement, a new cause.

EOD That was bravura containment that many of us loose cannons require from time to time. The sad part is it works too often.

Please be available if I ever need to retain your services when I happen to be, uh . . . "misunderstood".

“It was the young woman’s fault,” where have we heard such words before?

I expect it did not help that young woman's self-image to have an adult say in a very public way that she looked like a boy.

I can't wrap my head around this at all. That relief society president needs to be impeached.

They need enemies, if they don't have any, they make them up.

Sadly, expect to see more of this in the future.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Here's a scene from "Hitler's Madman" (1943) about the razing of Lidice in WW2 where Reinhard Heydrich inspects female students who are about to be sent to the Eastern Front to serve German soldiers:

Is that factual?

Reinhard Heydrich, the man who devised and implemented the Final Solution, was truly a monster. But I have never read that he was a pimp as well.

The movie is fictional, but was based on what was known at the time. Douglas Sirk (Detlef Sierck) met Heydrich before the start of the war and John Carradine's performance is based on the real Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich was a womanizer who was a young officer in the Navy after WWI who was forced to resign after an affair with a waitress while engaged to an admiral's daughter.

There's a movie about him and the Wannsee Conference, with Kenneth Branagh in the central role. It captures the bureaucratic nature of the holocaust, something that Hannah Arendt would have recognized instantly.

It's just a group of bureaucrats at a conference meeting, but what they are discussing so matter of factly is the mass extermination of human beings.

Yep, that's the one. I read a book on Wannsee many years ago, and the movie is quite faithful to the actual history.

It's remarkable how momentous an event can be even when the participants do not address the subject directly.

How a well educated kid from a prominent wealthy family became a sadistic idealistic agent of evil is a lesson for all of us.

I think she should have to pay for the extra security and that the kid sues her ass. That would shut her up.

I have to wonder if this school board member has toured a middle or high school any time in recent memory. The kids have gotten freakishly tall. And yes, that includes the girls. I've had to tilt my head back to talk to sixth graders.

Obviously she's a whack-a-doodle, but that's how things go in certain quarters nowadays. It's the triumph of the ignorant. At least there is an enormous reaction against her remarks. That's a positive.

Yeah, it's not that unusual anymore! You might expect that in high school, but it's middle school as well nowadays.
