"Unlicensed, volunteer religious chaplains would be allowed to serve in Utah’s public schools under a bill advanced by a Utah House committee on Tuesday afternoon. But critics worry allowing religion to have a role in public education could be unconstitutional and harm students. HB514 from Rep. Keven Stratton, R-Orem, requires local school boards to inform the State Board of Education whether they are interested in using volunteer chaplains by Sept. 30, 2024. Local boards must also hold a vote on whether they will allow chaplains by Sept. 30. 2025. It would be up to individual local boards to set requirements and guidelines for school chaplains, including qualifications, duties, parental consent and oversight....

....Critics worry that Stratton’s proposal allows religious groups to proselytize to students. The bill does not prohibit volunteer chaplains from evangelizing in schools, as those policies would be left to individual school boards."

This is similar to a bill that was passed in Texas, and to me represents an undesirable intrusion of religion into the public schools. It could also potentially bypass safeguards in place for students such as requiring school personnel to get background checks and mandatory reporter training.

Why does society seem to have to reinvent the wheel over and over and over again? Hasn't it been firmly established that common-sense safeguards are highly desirable, especially when it comes to protecting children?

What would be a logical reason to forego background checks?

Looking at our current political climate, not only national, but statewide as well.

Logic and rational thought has left the house, and whatever is left, just ain't working. I have more faith in an amoeba, than I do in religion and politics.

agree, with a minor correction:

the phrase was (applying to Elvis Presley) 'Elvis has left the building'

supposedly said by his security detail.

One way to handle it is for many to apply while claiming to be crazy religions.

If I were there I would try it as a Priest of The First Church of Larry the Jackalope.

just keeps getting worse and worse.

My dad retired in the 1990s from teaching. He couldn't stand it anymore. He said when he hired on, there were about 5 people who worked in the administrative area. When he left, he said they filled a whole building. He said it was all a big mess.

And here we are how many years later. I can't imagine going to school nowadays.

Isn't there a certain thing that can't be named that should prohibit clergy access to children? This is mad.

Yet statistically, it is more commonly committed by school teachers than the clergy. You don't hear that in the media much. When I was at school one of my female teachers was having an affair with a pupil. You don't hear much about that either.

Citation for your claim? I would argue the reverse. Background checks, mandatory reporter laws and associated trainings for every school worker go a long way towards curbing that behavior. Teachers and other educators know very well that if they are caught, they lose their jobs and their teaching or professional licenses.

Agree. If you are going to claim "Yet statistically, it is more commonly committed by school teachers than the clergy." you need to provide the stats or it is nothing but your own hot air.

This is the poster who recently told us he used to work as a librarian, which was untrue.

He's not likely to provide any sources for this claim either.

If you want information on other people, lead by example and tell us more personal details about yourself or use your real name. If you don't wish to do that then stop asking others to.

I'm not responsible for what you say about yourself. And frankly, I have zero interest in knowing anything more.

Apologies if that hurts your feelings.

Show me where I asked anyone for his or her real name.

Remember when you asked me to support your contention that 'w' should be considered a vowel because of the way it's used in owl?

Those were the days!!

That was part of my subterfuge, Jesus. I was trying desperately to discover your real name and wanted to buy a vowel.

It's a dipthong. Do with that what you will.

"Dipthong" would be a better screen name for Jesus than elderolddog, wouldn't it!

Dipthong
Dingaling
Dingdong

You have 24 hours to come up with a haiku using these three words!  And no, it doesn't have to be gospel oriented.

A haiku has three line: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables.

All prizes to be awarded in the hereafter...

I wasn't looking for "diphthong." I was writing a haiku from the supplied words without concern for whether they made any sense.

I mean, they came from EOD.

Does the lds church even do background checks before they send the missionaries out? Anyone know do missionaries receive background checks?

Yes ... I was checked for hemorrhoids.

Turns out they were brine shrimp...

Background checks on people who are minors or were minors just a short time ago would likely reveal and prevent very little.

I had never thought of it before, but character references from people who aren't incentivized to get them out on missions (i.e. not parents or leaders) would probably do a lot more than a background check. Not a lot...but more.

I believe that the prostate check is not required and is dependent upon the physician performing the exam's preference.
