“The U.A.B. system said it was worried about potential criminal prosecutions after Alabama’s Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children.“

That would be in violation of the US Constitution.

An attempted coup would be too and yet it happened.

I think the Constitution is being used more like scripture. Things that I thought were obvious end up being discussed and spun (aka interpreted) so whoever is in charge gets the conclusion they want.

It looks like Alabama has figured out another way to blow through millions of taxpayer money.

If only they cared about the actual children like they care about what is going on in uteruses.

It's about control, people. I'm going to buy stock in companies that manufacture red cloth and handmaid dresses and hats. ;-/

I do not understand how preventing harm to an embryo is more important than caring if kids are harmed by guns. Nothing makes sense to me lately.

Alabama consistently ranks as being one of the worst states for K-12 education.

I don't think that the people who were so keen on this saw it playing out this way. There are lots of unintended consequences.

I respectfully disagree. It's not like Prohibition where most people thought only hard liquor would be banned.

There are decades worth of speeches and literature from Evangelical extremists who want total control over women, reproduction, sex, and sexuality.

I agree. If embryos are children then parent or parents of the embryos should get a tax deduction on their state taxes. Probably as long as the embryos are frozen.

https://www.npr.org/2022/09/02/1120692940/a-pregnant-woman-who-was-ticketed-for-driving-in-an-hov-lane-has-gotten-another-

Brandy Bottone, the Texas woman who said she had a right to the HOV lane because her fetus counted as a second passenger, is at it again.

The 32-year-old from Plano was issued a second traffic citation in July for riding solo in a high-occupancy lane, Claire Crouch, a spokeswoman from the Dallas District Attorney's office, told NPR.

"It was about a month after the first ticket that she was pulled over and ticketed again," Crouch said, adding that "the current case is pending."

Bottone's initial story attracted international attention.

After being questioned by Dallas County sheriff's deputies for appearing to ride alone, Bottone pointed to her belly and told the officers, "My baby girl is right here," she told the Dallas Morning News. By that logic, she said, she hadn't violated the law, which requires at least two passengers in a vehicle in an HOV lane.

At the time, she wasn't "trying to make a political statement," she said. But, when the deputies looked at her blankly, she felt a need to provide some context for them.

Women should at least get something out of Roe v Wade being overturned.

I have a very close friend that works for the State's Department of Transportation and his opinion of the HOV regulation is that the extra person(s) should be of driving age.

His reasoning is the idea behind the HOV lanes was to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. If the added passenger isn't old enough to drive, there wouldn't be a reduction in the number of vehicles on the road.

Makes sense to me, but then I'm not a politician that writes these laws.

A freezer failure will be murder. People will try to claim their frozen embryos as dependents. Someone will be appointed to policing the in-vitro clinics. If some embryos are shipped, it may not be legal to cross state lines with the "minors." Orphaned frozen embryos will have to be kept frozen indefinitely.

This is madness, and I guarantee that more potential children will be lost compared to any gained.

Yes, that's the bottom line - and I agree.

Ok. Embryos are children. Cadavers are dead adults. You could be in trouble for having a dead body in your house. If a university has some stiffs that were donated for research and teaching purposes that’s a different situation. What makes a frozen embryo at a university any different?

Universities aren't stupid. They aren't going to shut down a highly profitable IVF business out of a far fetched theory of potential prosecution (one that has no precedent).

I think it's a form of protest.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/21/us/alabama-ruling-frozen-embryos-facility-pauses-ivf/index.html

A second fertility clinic in Alabama has halted part of its IVF treatment programs following the state Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children.

Alabama Fertility’s clinic in Birmingham has “paused transfers of embryos for at least a day or two,” according to Penny Monella, the chief operating officer at Alabama Fertility Specialists.

This marks the second known fertility clinic to at least temporarily stop treatments. On Wednesday, The University of Alabama at Birmingham health system became the first organization in the state to confirm that it is pausing IVF treatment out of legal concerns in wake of the court’s ruling.

Its announcement could be the start of what reproductive rights advocates and medical experts have been warning about for days: that the high court’s decision could have devastating consequences for Alabamians seeking infertility treatments each year to build their families – and it could soon have profound impacts far beyond the state’s borders.

This is no joke here in AL. It is not a publicity stunt. They are doing this. A bill eliminating DEI that includes things like who can use what bathroom just hit the legislature; the two clinics and surgeons that offered gender-affirming cosmetic surgery (not reassignment) suspended those types of procedures two months ago. Everything people say would never happen will happen here.

I fear for my daughter and for the safety of my LGBT+ kid. They plan to leave the state when as they move on to graduate school. My other kid and their spouse already have jobs lined up out of state. My other kids are already making their lives elsewhere.

My daughter is trans, and her partner is non-binary. They moved in with me (WA state) from TN about a year ago. They are watching in horror.

We’ve got to protect these people. Not just yours and mine. All of them.

Do they have birthday parties for frozen embryos?

How old is the oldest frozen embryo?

Can a two-year-old kid get a driver's license if he or she was an embryo for 14 years?

If an embryo is almost 15-years-frozen, can Joseph Smith marry her?

Do the owners of the embryos get to list them as dependents for income tax purposes?

What about that special payment doing covid, can the owners sue for back payment?
