As a missionary 30 years ago, we played outdoor volleyball on p-days at a place named KoKomo Joes. We rented the court by the hour and it was inevitable that some of the elders wore skins (sans t-shirt) while playing in the sun. Some of the elders wore BYU t-shirts as well.
Someone ratted us missionaries out. And KoKomo became off limits. It was announced over the pulpit that it was improper for us to be at KoKomo, the mini golf course or the giant arcade (video games).
We continued playing indoor basketball games until the injuries got out of hand. Then basketball was officially banned so we went to the park to play tackle football (safe right?- which was already banned).
My mission couldn't make up its mind. Basketball returned but mandatory garments (so all these young men had their garments sagging below their shorts). The pictures of sagging garments surfaced so then garments were NOT to be worn while playing basketball.
Exactly. And the rules are done on a mission by mission basis in response to local conditions/complaints. It might even be down to the zone or even district level. We used to play touch football up on the beaches in Recife, Brazil. No problems.
One time we challenged the local young men to a game of touch football, followed by a game of soccer. Soccer doesn't stop for a committee meeting after every play. All that running did us (the gringos) in!
