Apparently, there is an official church class (with an official curriculum) which involves members who are encouraged to open up and discuss their personal problems with other members of the class. They sit in a circle of chairs and are encouraged to divulge their deepest fears and emotions which may be holding them back from achieving exaltation.

My mom was very apprehensive about discussing this. Her exact words were- I'm not signing up for this class. You have to confess things to others. I don't want to. There's nothing wrong with me. I'm not emotional about everything.

I think my mom calls this an Emotional Support class.

I liken this approach to group therapy to The Bob Newhart Show and my other favorite film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

This sounds very much like sitting in the "Day Room" with all the other mental patients.

If this is real people need to be very careful about what they say. The Bishop and ward counsel can't keep their mouths shut what makes anyone think that this will in anyway be confidential.

If you feel the need to go to group therapy, please use a professional. I beg you.!

It sounds like group therapy without a qualified therapist. Your mom is handling it sensibly.

1. Privacy.

2. Professionalism.

Not all personal issues need to be addressed by a specialist but, first, as others have said, you may not want (for your own protection and privacy) the entire ward to find out what's truly and literally on your mind, and second, if you do need a specialist you won't find the best help in a prayer circle in a Mormon chapel.

I'm not an expert in much but I do know that last comment above is 100% accurate.

I hope people aren't pressured to feel they must unburden their soul to a group of peers who are likely, by definition, not the best help out there for whatever ails a person.

I hope the church doesn't end up doing its thing in making members feel they must obey the "suggestions" the big tops come up with.
