Here is the link

https://www.ksl.com/article/51188954/kaysville-homeowners-show-up-in-large-numbers-to-oppose-warming-center

Per google

"About 80% of the population in Kaysville, Utah is members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). This is similar to the LDS population in Utah as a whole"

Hmm? If the lds members would be against a warming center that would not be christlike behavior.

Anyone here lives in Kaysville? What have you seen?

Kaysville does not want to attract bums.

It's a state law.

KSL used AI to write a portion of the article, the "Key Takeaways."

I understand Kaysville's response but this is just the tip of the iceberg. The bigger question is what do we about the homeless problem.

A lot of the homeless are schizophrenics. They have mental health issues that need to be dealt with. Others are drug/alcohol addicted. Some just had too many hard knocks.

You deal with it by having mental health institutions, penalizing drug dealers severely, rehab and creating an economic environment where there's a living wage and jobs. That means lower housing costs and having incentives to not outsource.

blanket statement about being schizophrenic. I am schizophrenic, and I am on pretty heavy meds. Just to survive takes considerable work to get what you need.

I feel the same, that there needs to be additional resources in mental health as a total, not just Kaysville, but a blanket statement is unwarranted.

Also, just imagine what the incoming administration is going to do when they are in power...

Not to bring politics.

When President Regan was governor of California he shut down all the State mental hospitals (I'm actually a fan of Regan in a lot of areas), and it was a train wreck, create a problem and then point your finger at it like someone else created it. You see this happening today with the homeless situation in Los Angeles, lots of finger pointing, but the truth is these homeless people in LA are NOT (the majority of them) FROM LA, they are from the rest of the US and are sent there, sometimes with a bus ticket

as someone who has a property on the same street as a shelter in Reno, I can tell you from experience you don’t want a shelter near you property. Why does the poster think that it is Christ like pollute your neighborhood with prostitution, drugs, public drunkenness and unstable and unsafe people

It's Christ-like because it seems probable that it's how Christ would have reacted. Christ is not known for his real-estate holdings...

I'm not even a christian, but I do know that.

+++ SM.

I understand it's a tough problem for neighbourhoods. I always hope a compassionate solution can be found though.

Who knows what living hell some people have to endure that sends them along the rocky road to homelessness.

I think that shelters, soup kitchens, etc. need to be placed carefully. Kaysville already has two other warming centers that did not cause comment among the residents. I understand the concerns.

Where I live, the shelter is not in a residential area. It's in a light industrial area. No one objects.

I ask because Jesus was well known for hanging out with prostitutes, the poor, the mentally unwell, and all sorts of "unstable and unsafe people." That's sort of the point of the four gospels, isn't it?

You don't seem to know what you are talking about.

The most unsafe people were the church leaders. It was an apostle who sold Jesus out and the high priests who had him arrested. When the Roman governor said I see no problem with this man, the church leaders and members demanded crucifixion.

So what I learned from the New Testament is never trust church leaders.

According to the LDS Church you won't meet Jesus outside of their Multimillion dollar temples that you covet to give everything for.

The drug addicted bum in the gutter has no chance. A fentanyl overdose will be their blessing to get them off the streets.

The Kaysville church was not going to be a permanent shelter. It was going to take a maximum of 18(?) people, on nights when the nighttime low was predicted below 18 degrees, a fairly rare event along the Wasatch Front, and also usually a single night event.

The state law was passed in 2023, and a church in downtown SLC (Methodist?) (2nd E 2nd S?) volunteered to be a warming center, and asked other churches in the area to provide people to spend the night at the church to handle situations that might arise, and keep an eye on things. County employees would be on call for behavioral problems. I don’t know if any county employees were there for the whole night.

I only recall 3 or 4 calls for volunteers each year. I have not heard of any problems with the program. That seems like a pretty WWJD kind of solution. There are plenty of residents downtown, including moi. I don’t recall any objections, but we are used to homeless people. They can be kind of annoying sometimes, but not particularly scary. I suppose the success in SLC is what made the Kaysville church think they could do it to, and make a little extra money to boot.

Suburban NIMBYism. Davis County is nothing but suburban cities.

I just got back from volunteering at a code-blue warming center here in Utah. The guests are always so kind, polite, and thankful. They ask very little, but a warm good nights sleep. There are those struggling with addiction and mental health issues. My wife and I have served this population as volunteers for three years now. We Have never had reason to fear for our safety, or the safety of those getting the services. Crime rates have not increased in the area. Although there were some people who cut up PRIDE flags next door (they were local teens from mormon privileged families.

The Kaysville brouhaha is nothing but bigoted ignorant banter. We at the local warming center provide shelter at the local Episcopalian church. Those church members are so warm and welcoming. They provide the space, heating, lighting, etc. free of charge. Many of them volunteer as well. Too bad the Kaysville Mormons don't have the sermon-on-mount mentality.

I am an atheist who generally despises organized religion of any stripe. But I cannot find fault with St. John's church and its parishioners. Just good people. Too bad the Kaysville bigots have no such kindness.

The following letter was published in the SLTrib a few days ago, re the warming shelter:

Where’s the Christianity?

I wish to correct a response made by Don Kraftt in a recent front page Tribune story, "Not why we elected you," when he pulled an offer to provide emergency "code blue" shelter to the unhoused in the Mountain Road Presbyterian Church due to "intense backlash, and fear" from his neighbors.

He is quoted as saying, "This issue has become one of contention and anger and even division in the precious community that we are so proud to be a part of, and we certainly do not want to be the cause of such angst."

My correction contends that the church might be seen as a catalyst of community angst, but the actual cause is more closely associated with that community's anti-Christian reaction to the offer. I make an assumption here that many of the objecting local residents identify as Christians, whether Presbyterian or other, but disciples of Christ nonetheless.

Considering the traditional ministry of Jesus, I wonder how these seeming CINOs (Christians In Name Only) would expect their professed savior to judge their actions in the light of that ministry?

Considering that Jesus died a terrible death upholding both the human and divine rights of all men, it doesn't seem to be asking too much of his disciples to honor his sacrifice by allowing some of his most unfortunate children basic temporary shelter from life-threatening low temperatures.

No community member is being asked to die on a cross here.
Just to practice their Christianity beyond the church parking lot.

Just a related note here:

The William A Barnard (WAB) warming center is now officially open 7 night a week (not just on Code Blue days) in Cache Valley Utah to provide safety, warmth, food, and shelter during the next 5 months.

Please pass this information to those in need.

Thanks All!
