Looked through some archives in Las Vegas papers, and the LDS church filed a lawsuit to build a temple in the middle of a neighborhood?

The TSCC is suing over religious discrimination. This is insane.

Article is paywalled, but according to this it is residents suing Las Vegas not TSCC

https://news3lv.com/news/local/complaint-filed-against-city-of-las-vegas-over-lone-mountain-temple-lds-latter-day-saints-church-southern-nevada-clark-county-court-neighborhood-zoning

"A group of residents is asking a judge to reverse the Las Vegas City Council's controversial decision to approve a temple in the northwest valley.

The Nevada Rural Preservation Alliance, a group made of people living near the Lone Mountain Temple site, filed a petition for judicial review in Clark County District Court on Sunday."

"The alliance also claims that city council members showed clear favoritism toward the church. There was only one public comment meeting, and it took place in a Latter-day Saints stake house in February, according to the complaint."

"A group of Las Vegas homeowners has taken legal action to stop the construction of a large Mormon temple in their neighborhood. They are asking a Nevada court to overturn the Las Vegas City Council’s recent approval of the project, arguing that the council misinterpreted building restrictions."

"Attorney Evan Schwab, representing the homeowners, claims the council’s decision was not supported by substantial evidence and alleges potential conflicts of interest due to donations from the church’s law firm to council members."

"The City of Las Vegas is facing a lawsuit following its approval of a proposal to build a new temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) near Lone Mountain. The lawsuit, filed by the Nevada Rural Preservation Alliance, represents a group of property owners who live near the planned construction site, expressing concerns over the project's impact on their community."

"After months of debate, the City of Las Vegas gave the green light to the project, albeit with some design modifications to address community concerns. However, the Nevada Rural Preservation Alliance argues in its lawsuit that the city's approval process was flawed. The petitioners claim that the City of Las Vegas "abused its discretion" and "made errors of law" in granting the construction application for the temple.

The lawsuit also points to past decisions by the city that denied similar requests from other religious organizations. In 2003, the city rejected a request from Canyon Ridge Church to build a 77-foot cross, citing a 35-foot height limit. Similarly, in 2009, the city denied the International Church of Las Vegas a permit for an 85-foot prayer tower. The petitioners argue that the approval of the LDS Temple contradicts these previous decisions and raises questions about the consistency of the city's zoning and approval processes."

Your link says:

"Residents of a neighborhood near Lone Mountain allege that the city of Las Vegas violated open meeting laws around the time it approved the building of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple, according to a lawsuit.

The lawsuit, which seeks to void the City Council’s approval of the project, alleges that residents were not properly informed about a crucial July 17 meeting.

The complaint cites a letter a resident wrote to the city prior to the meeting asking for a delay in deliberations, informing officials that there were no signs posted at the proposed project’s property that would’ve informed residents about “key details” about the meeting and public participation.

“As someone that lives near the property and walks and drives in the area often, I can attest to the fact that no signage was ever installed related to the previously mentioned meeting,” the resident wrote. The complaint says the city nevertheless moved forward with the meeting, disregarding both the code’s requirements and notification requirements.

Furthermore, the residents took issue with limitations the city put on public comments on the project, alleging that time limits and denial of speaking opportunities violated an “equal participation” clause, according to the lawsuit, which said the city allowed ample time for testimony by project proponents.

“These individuals were pandered to based upon their favored viewpoint whereas individuals who did oppose the LDS temple were restricted in their speech based upon the content of their views,” the complaint alleges."

all courts have an index of pending cases, many of the associated documents are available online;

First, determine the name of the court involved, then find out if that court makes documents such as the Summons & Complaint and other documents are available online; Odessey is one of those third-party providers here in the PNW, I don't know about any elsewhere.

This might have been filed in the Nevada Federal District Court which may in turn have distinct divisions for different counties.

From my first link above, the case was filed in Clark County District Court. From that link, you can read the entire complaint.

This was my initial thought, and here it is.

"Attorney Evan Schwab, representing the homeowners, claims the council’s decision was not supported by substantial evidence and alleges potential conflicts of interest due to donations from the church’s law firm to council members."

Why don't they just build the temple on the strip with all the other grifting gaudy buildings?

It would get the church a chunk of the most valuable real estate land in LV too (which I think is their bigger goal).

Because Big Nellie got a Revelation from TheLard to stay away from The Strip - because Formula 1 racing has come back & the noise would interfere with Sacrament meeting one day a year.

I've already woken up this morning mad as hell about something else. I am sick and tired of the manipulative tactics that the TSCC is taking to get their way. 'Let's bribe the Council! It's the Jesus way!'

Sorry for my attitude this morning. It's just a whiny thing for today. I'll be fine later!

Thank you for the information about the article behind a paywall. The news is becoming more and more limited nowadays. Felt Like I read it wrong. My brother brought it to my mom's attention. If feel like we are a family of people that do not agree with whatever is going on.

And it's going to get worse.

You're exactly right. You should see the letter that I wrote to the Fairview TX Mayor and Council about fighting the temple there. Wish I could get it to you.
