WE had a senior missionary couple move into our ward. Really nice couple. They said their assignment was to assist the three Bishops that meet in our building. That is what they were called to do. I thought the Bishops has an secretary, a ward council plus an elders quorum presidency. Why would these bishops need extra help and what kind of help would be provided? Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks.

That's new to me.

I hope it doesn't involve harassing people who stopped attending.

This is a made-up assignment. There really isn't anything for senior missionaries to do if they aren't at some historical site where they can show people around or at a genealogical library or such. Gawd forbid they let these senior citizens actually do real service in a food pantry, homeless shelter or such. Good grief.

My old next door neighbor got "called" as a MP in Russia. He said they paid LDS Inc. 3k a month for that "privilege". "The" church can make up a ton of positions designed to take 36K a year away from their members. They might be designated to deliver the Deseret News or be WalMart type greeters at some temple.

Couples are often called to work in areas with leadership shortages. Insufficient priesthood holders usually

You want to be able to understand why Mormons do things? Good luck with that. :)

Part of keeping them hooked is keeping them invested by giving them busy work. Busy hands make malleable brains.

Not much to understand. They didn’t tell you how they are to help the bishops, and you didn’t ask. My parents got called on a mission to do paperwork in the local mission - they were able to live at home, and went into the office as needed, which was usually most week days. My mom submitted the paperwork on baptisms to SLC. Dad managed all the paperwork for maintaining the elders’ cars.

I don’t know what a couple would be doing for 3 bishops, but I imagine something clerical like what my parents did. Maybe employment specialists. That’s a thing in wards these days. My parents also did that calling. And temple workers. Gluttons for punishment, they were.

They church is having a hard time to convince older people to serve a church mission. And I think the church asks these golden aged volunteers how they want to serve a senior mission. The halcyon era of the church having more than enough volunteers is over.
