It doesn't care what your ideological beliefs are.

It doesn't care about your "alternative" faux medicine.

It doesn't care if you think vaccines are the work of the devil or some hidden, insidious cabal.

It will use your body to multiply itself at your expense.

Bird flu has now spread to humans in a dozen states after public health officials confirmed an Ohio man had contracted the disease.

The Mercer County farmworker had come into contact with deceased commercial poultry, the Ohio Department of Health announced Feb. 12. Prior to this latest case, 68 people in 11 states had been infected with an H5 strain of avian influenza, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One person in Louisiana who had been exposed to wild birds and a noncommercial backyard flock has died, a loss the CDC called “tragic” but “not unexpected because of the known potential for infection with these viruses to cause severe illness and death.”

The first study on the H5N1 bird flu outbreak from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make it to publication under the Trump administration came out Thursday.

The journal released data suggesting some spillovers from dairy cattle into humans have gone undetected, including in states where dairy herds have not tested positive.

This comes after a freeze in external communications that interrupted the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, or MMWR, a mainstay of public health communication. Publication on other topics resumed last week.

NEW YORK (AP) — A new study shows that bird flu has silently spread from animals to some veterinarians.

The study published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention echoes two smaller ones that detected evidence of infection in previously undiagnosed farmworkers. In those studies, several of the infected workers remembered having symptoms of H5N1 bird flu, while none of the veterinarians in the new paper recalled any such symptoms.

The new study is more evidence that the official U.S. tally of confirmed human bird flu infections — 68 in the last year — is likely a significant undercount, said Dr. Gregory Gray, an infectious disease researcher at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

“This means that people are being infected, likely due to their occupational exposures, and not developing signs of illness and therefore not seeking medical care,” Gray said. He said it shows that officials cannot fully understand bird flu transmission by only tracking people who go to medical clinics with symptoms.

Three or so years ago, I remember looking a newspaper, and there were stories on how
* there was a big new strain of Covid about to kill lots of people.
* Putin was about to nuke us.
* Monkey pox was about to become a serious problem.
* Climate change was going to kill us.
* The economy was about to collapse.

The first three have never happened. The last two are ongoing problems but we're still here and there are positive solutions to both of them.

The overwhelming sense from that paper was of fear and misery being deliberately drummed up by mass media. The same media has the cheek to complain that there is a mental illness epidemic and suicide rates are increasing. The underlying message is "you're helpless, let the big boys take care of it."

It isn't just the Mormons who are apocalyptic and use fear to control people. There will always be problems of some sort.

If you live in enough fear and worry you will never leave your home and will be emotionally paralysed.

So what do you propose?

That we do nothing?

Reality check:

There was a new strain of covid that was more infectious. Whether it was more lethal was an open question. New strains pop up on a regular basis. Inevitably, one of them turns out to be the most infectious. Whether it is more lethal than the current most infectious version is always an open question. This year we are having a mild covid season and a very difficult flu season.

It was feared that Putin might use tactical nukes in Ukraine. That does not constitute nuking "us", but still it was a very worrying possibility.

Mpox could have been a serious problem, and still can be. Ditto ebola, and bird flu. Those are "known unknowns" - we are aware they might become a problem. Covid was an "unknown unknown", to use Donald Rumsfeld's terms. We were not on the lookout for that one.

As for climate change, the last million years or so has been an unusually cold period for the earth. Life on earth can survive much warmer temps/much higher CO2 levels. It's happened before. However, this recent cold period is the time when the human race developed, and we are adapted to relatively reliable cold temps. Our food production systems in particular depend on that. If palm trees and crocodiles return to northern Alaska, life on this planet will be vastly different, and the transition will likely not be easy.

As for the economy, shipping was badly snarled because of covid, plus people spending money on stuff because they couldn't spend it on services like restaurants and vacations, both leading to a shortage of stuff. But it was also the beginning of 30 consecutive months of under-4% unemployment, a spectacular run. Five percent is considered full employment. Four percent indicates there is a labor shortage, which drives up labor costs, which it did.

Remember Jor-El before the High Council of Krypton?

He tried to warn them, but they wouldn't listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUmMeS2c4Uw

The danger isn't here yet. But it could be here sooner than we realize.

The problem is stopping potential threats before they are a problem.

You can't combat threats if you deny their existence.

"He tried to warn them, but they wouldn't listen."

It's just like when Lehi tried to warn the people of the destruction of Jerusalem.

Marlon Brando as Jor-El made for some great acting along with some nice irony considering Brando's personal life.

Right now, transmission is animal-to-human. Nurses are warning that if human-to-human transmission starts to occur, all bets are off. The H5N1 bird-flu virus is most closely related to the early 20th century Spanish flu. They say that it will make Covid look like child's play (their words, not mine.) We will go from 7 million deaths worldwide to 70 million deaths. As with the Spanish flu, it will target all ages equally including young, healthy people, and will kill quickly, often within a day.

Now H5N1 may or may not make the jump. But if it does, look out.

Recently, scientific research programs that focus on keeping crops and farm animals healthy have been gutted.

https://old.reddit.com/r/fednews/comments/1ipsasx/firing_the_next_generation_of_scientists_from_the/

There have also been significant layoffs to the CDC and NIH staff.

Heaven help us if there is another worldwide pandemic. We will in no way be prepared for it.

Mankind has had a good run. But we have also screwed a good many things up. The earth could use a good human reducing/eliminating enema. Personally I am hoping for Apophis to hit hard (preferably Washington DC or Florida. Secondary to that, a human specific epidemic would work. Fingers Crossed.

Bird flu is a concern, but as BoJ said, it doesn't seem to be as rapidly and easily transmitted as something like Covid. It doesn't have a high mortality rate as, say, Ebola.

That said, we've walked right into this bird flu problem by not staying on top of it. The way we pack animals into factory farms is going to make it even worse.

We are going to have trouble getting the truth, tracking and reporting going forward.

Factory farms are the way we are headed. The E in DEI gave them a chance.

Something is being done. Have a friends who took part in a bird flu vaccine trial more than a year ago. Currently there are two vaccines for bird flu.

Can you explain why the studies presented here are wrong?

Because if you can't, your couplet probably means the opposite of what you think.

The epidemic profile is totally different than COVID. Though, sadly, considering how badly that was managed, sigh ...

Pseudoscience doesn't cure people.

Make-believe doesn't prevent disease.

Cult secrets from social media won't keep you for getting sick.

Empirically tested science and fact-based evidence are our best weapons against disease.

Two people, in Wyoming and Ohio, have been hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a routine flu update on Friday.

The person from Wyoming is still in hospital, while the Ohio patient has been released, according to the report. Both patients experienced “respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms”, the report said, without detailing those symptoms.

“This shows that H5N1 can be very severe and we should not assume that it will always be mild,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan.

The news comes amid one of the worst seasonal flu outbreaks in 15 years – raising the potential for the emergence of a more dangerous virus that combines bird flu and seasonal flu in a process called reassortment.

FDA cancels meeting to select flu strains for next season's shots
The canceled meeting comes just days after a CDC vaccine advisory committee meeting was abruptly postponed.

A Food and Drug Administration vaccine advisory committee meeting scheduled for March to select the strains to be included in next season's flu shot has been canceled, a panel member said Wednesday.

Federal health officials notified members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee of the cancelation in an email Wednesday afternoon, said committee member Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The email, Offit said, offered no explanation for the scrapped meeting.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the FDA, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The cancelation comes as the United States is in the midst of a particularly severe flu season. So far, there have been 86 deaths in children and 19,000 deaths in adults this season, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
