It looks like a river rock, not something you'd find digging a well.

My guess is that he acquired it from someone else and made up a story. Joe's whole life was a story.

You can find them naturally. I know people who can find them. They are often on river banks or sea shores.

We used to collect them. Glue them together and paint them to make figurines. Oh the fun you can have with river rocks. One time I found a big piece of blue quartz. Man I wish I knew what happened to it. It was cool.

The decoder ring he got from Cracker Jacks was too hard to use.

River rocks can be found anywhere. They don’t have to be in a contemporary river. Any river over the last 4 billion years will do the job.

The fingerlakes region was carved out by glaciers. There would be a lot of round rocks in the ground.

If you ever get the chance, the gorge at Watkins Glen is fabulous.

He actually had several.

A hundred years ago the church released photos of two of his stones. One having two holes drilled in it and polished is clearly a Native American gorget (not sure the spelling)

Another was kind of like a fossilized sand dollar.

The latest one is vastly different from the previous two

I've read of a fourth one, small, black and egg shaped.

It’s called Banded Iron Jasper. Sometimes it’s called a Genesis Stone. Joey found it digging a well. He then used it to find buried treasure (FYI It didn’t work). I have two, just to show PIMOs what the magical seer-stone looked like (they were not impressed). I’m not into metaphysical stuff but the link gives the scientific explanation on how it formed, and also the metaphysical stuff, if you’re into that. If the link is not allowed I’ll take it down, but it’s informative about Joe’s seer stone.

EDIT: It’s not a common river rock.

From the PDF:

"Amazing grounding earth element energies with slight wind element wisdom that are meant to protect Shamanic Warriors while being taken to other dimensions for a safe earth return. Enjoy the travel. This stone provide for deep earth core grounding while one travels to spiritual heights and new dimensions. Provides inner strength courage (Earth Element) and knowledge (Wind Element) so one can be a Soul Purpose Shamanic warrior with discernment and power to be the light
of this lifetime healing all others."

Does not mention the rock-in-hat application.

More important question:

Where did Joseph get the idea of using rocks or crystals as a means of augury or divination?

Pre-Christian Germanic tradition?

The Romans adopted divination via animal entrails from the Etruscans.

They're quite commonly used in "occult" practices, and Joe LOVED the occult. See D.Michael Quinn's magnificent book "Early Mormonism and the Magic World View".

The book of revelations talks about all the saved getting a rock with the new name written on it.

Alternately he was copying the Urim and Thumin from the old testament

Joseph explains these stones are seer stones in D&C.

Google's generative AI spewed forth:

"Purpose:
The Urim and Thummim served as a way for the high priest to seek divine guidance and make decisions on behalf of the Israelites, particularly when facing important decisions or crises.

Nature:
The Bible doesn't provide a detailed description of the Urim and Thummim, but they were kept in the high priest's breastplate, which was part of the ephod, a priestly garment.

Meaning of the Terms:
"Urim" and "Thummim" are Hebrew words that are traditionally understood to mean "lights" and "perfections" or "perfect light".

Use:
The Urim and Thummim were used at critical moments in the history of God's people when special divine guidance was needed.

Biblical References:
They are mentioned in Exodus 28:30; Leviticus 8:8; Numbers 27:21; Deuteronomy 33:8; and other passages.

Later Interpretations:
Some scholars connect the Urim and Thummim with cleromancy (divination by casting lots), but it's also possible that no physical casting was involved, and the participants waited for a sign to answer a question.

LDS Church:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) sees the "Urim and Thummim" as completely dissociated from seer stones, a distinction that persists today among many members of the church."

Jewish scholars don't know where the Urim and Thummim are now and don't know how to reproduce them. I suspect they are being kept at Hogwarts.

D&C 130: 10 the white stone mentioned in Rev 2:17 shall become a Urim and Thummim to each who receives one.

D&C 130:8 the place where god resides is a great Urim and Thummim.

D&C 130:9 the earth i. Its sanctified and immortal state will be a Urim and Thummim.

The two stones mentioned in the book of Mormon are referred to as interpreters.

Any stone formerly used by God as a suppository can be used for translation.

I was on one of those Rick Steves tours in Cornwall. The group had to wait in a pub before anything was happening, so a bunch of us went across the street and down to the shoreline in the rain and wind. We all looked along a shingle beach, picking up stones from a grand array of beautiful, smooth, and very colorful stones. I decided to look for my very own seer stone. Found one, too. It sits on a shelf in the TV room. Been trying to find a real live top hat to use. Eventually I'll use it to solve the NY Times crossword.
