There have been several instances lately of sporting events where the crowd engaged in "f*** the Mormons" chants. This begs the question 'what is it about Mormons?" There are not anti-Catholic chants at Notre Dame or Gonzaga or other Catholic universities, for example.

There was a letter to the editor today in SLTrib that addressed the issue. Here's the meat of the letter:

Maybe the LDS community should ask, “Why don’t they like us?” I know some have suggested it’s because of LDS treatment of women and the queer community, and those things might be factors, but seriously, I doubt those rowdy fans are all devoted LGBT+ allies, or rabid feminists.

Maybe the LDS community should look within themselves. Fairview, Texas and the Utah Legislature might be good places to start looking for examples of reasons why some have negative views about the “Mormons.”

Good letter.

I don't think Utah's Mike Lee is helping the reputation of Mormons much either.
There are lots of reasons right now for people to be uncivil.

As a friend told the missionaries his neighbors sent to him.(Utah)

I don't want to join your church, I live here and see what your people are really like.

Ouch.

Mormons can take comfort in knowing that when you are God's chosen people that you will be persecuted although you have done nothing other than be better than everybody else. ;)

After decades of not being Mormon anymore but occasionally finding myself among them it is easy to understand why a rowdy crowd would be so moved.

Exactly. "We're so persecuted" is how they react to any pushback.

Spot on.

Mormons don't want to change: they want outsiders to like them as they are.

And why logically should they change? They're God's chosen living as God wants.

I was going to ask why but you answered my question. I'd be fairly shocked if that happened here but given the recent boos at sporting events I'm beginning to get it. Although I wish sports could be left out of it. Somewhere you go to forget the world for a while, in my experience. When you're totally in the moment and leave walking on air when your team wins. Gotta love it.

So many stories of Mormon "persecution" are mere fabrication. The original persecution started with Mormons laying claim to Smith's"Zion", chasing homesteaders out and burning their homes. Mormons drew first blood.

Mormonism is elitist in every way.

-As a Missionary I was taught I was there to save Non-Members from their bad choices.

-Without the Temple you are deemed unworthy to be in Gods presence.

-If you make a mistake you get cast into a lower kingdom.

Now that I am out.

-I never get invited to anything.

-When the Sisters visit my wife I get side stares and glares.

-My non-member associates tell me how active members order their kids to have nothing to do with their kids.

-Actives will shun anyone who is inactive, seen with a beer, swears on occasion, observed washing the car in the driveway on a Sunday, etc.

-You have to first pay money to have a marginal chance of getting assistance as an inactive member.

Of course the list could go on for pages. But overall who wants to be associated with a bunch of self-absorbed elitist brats. Unless that is your definition of the tribe you want to belong to. Granted there are those who do not follow this trend who are members, but they are an exception to the norm.

Maybe putting on dark glasses and stumbling like (supposedly) you can't see what you're doing when the Sisters visit would help with that.

(sorry, I couldn't resist.)

Watch soccer in Scotland and Northern Ireland. You will hear plenty of anti-Catholic chants.

If you go to a sports event and you expect the other team to respect your precious feelings you need to get your big girl pants on. Maybe it was just about the game and not you.

A thought: Maybe the South Park Mormon episode has a lot to do with non members' attitudes.

Another possibility is smugness and being disingenuous.

I had worked with a RM awhile back. Basically everyone in my work group accepted him and did their best to be inclusive. He was always invited to join us for lunch. But he almost always brought his own lunch, a bologna sandwich with a HUG juice and some carrot sticks. A pretty boring lunch in my opinion. It was ok because we were 5 and we barely fit in a coworker SUV.

One day our beloved Mormon coworker accepted our lunch invite. We were shocked. Of course we asked him where he would like to dine for lunch. It was the usual "I don't know. You guys decide." He refused to give any input.

Yeah we decided to go to Apple bees for lunch. We split our group and two more of our lunch group joined me in my Goop jallopy. Some how I arrived at the restaurant first despite driving like a tortoise.

Everyone was there except for our Mormon. He freaked out and asked to be dropped off at a convenience store.

The group was pissed because he didn't give them a reason. I suspected that it had to do with the serving of alcoholic drinks. Keep in mind that none of us could drink while on the job.

I dm-ed the RM to let him know that I would stop at the store and pick him up. The prick decided to be a persecuted martyr and walked back to our work.

This was the same person who was offended by coffee aroma. He would move the coworker's cup if it was next to him.

This guy sounds like a caricature of a Mormon with no social skills. They are not usually that bad, but enough of them are that bad that a general impression begins to form.

A co worker of mine from Colorado started ranting about mormons before he knew I was an ex.

His main complaint was every mormon he knew would smile to your face, and bad-mouth, cheat and steal behind your back.

"never trust a mormon. They're fake AF" was the exact quote.

I couldn't disagree. And then we ordered another round...

The most disgusting anti mormon thing I ever heard happened in an airport lounge.

There was a news program about a child in south Salt Lake that was struck by lightning and died.

I was sitting next to an Air Force Colonel who said out loud. "Good, one less Mormon bitch that will breed."

Reminded me of the published account in a newspaper right after the Hauns Mill massacre.

One of the participants bragged about putting a musket to the head of a nine year old boy and killing him. Whe asked why he replied "nits breed lice".

No one was punished for the massacre.

I have no good reason to justify such hatred that grown men would rejoice in the death of a child.

back channels of members rat each other out for minor items, it happened to me regarding open, public testimony of mine to a government agency.

Yup, it really happened.

also: Often an ulterior motive. I think many Mormons are confused as to why 'everyone' doesn't want to join...

The vast majority of people know nothing about Mormons except the irritation of their door knocking.

Yes that's true, plus some random things. There are a lot of (ex) Mormons around but some are good at hiding it. I encounter members all the time in my area but I only know they are Mormons because I used to go to church with them.

I think Mormons don’t get good training in how to be humble.

That doesn’t go over well with most respectable people who did.

True that.

"I'm going to be a god and you're not" does not exactly induce humility.

"I have more truth than you."

"You're not allowed in my church clubhouse where God likes us best."

And then there is:
my children are too precious to be allowed to risk eternal damnation by playing with your children.

That's a real charmer.

I was recently watching a youtuber that never puts up anything religious but they said something that struck me and applies here. Not their exact words but in a nutshell, the problem with Trad/Crypto Catholics, LDS and Evangelicals is that they are not happy practicing their religion, they want to force everyone to live by their religious rules.

One thing I hear from trades people is that Mormons don't like to pay their bills on time, especially if they owe a nevermo. I wonder if they stiff each other in the local Moridor.
