Perhaps the greatest challenge to the Mormon Church in this century. The Mormon Churches Prophetic Document, 'the Proclamation to the World' is under attack by those seeking equality.
The Southern Utah Ex/PostMormon Association November Lecture series will be given by Cedar City Attorney Nadine Hansen.
In August, Judge Vaughn Walker ruled that Proposition 8 violated the U.S. Constitution, and enjoined the State of California from enforcing the law. The State defendants declined to appeal the case, indicating that California was set to resume issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Judge Walker stayed his ruling for a few days to allow the proponents to file an appeal to the Ninth Circuit, which they promptly did. Since that time, but Proponents of Prop 8 (protectmarriage.com) filed an appeal, and the Ninth Circuit temporarily stayed Judge Walker's decision, but placed the Prop 8 decision on a fast track. Both sides have now filed their appellate briefs and the matter has been set for oral argument on December 6. A coalition of religious organizations, including the LDS church, filed "friend of the court" briefs. Mrs. Hansen will discuss the major arguments of the proponents and opponents of Prop 8, as well as those of the church coalition, and will give her best guess as to what the Ninth Circuit might do about the case. She will also touch on recent statements by LDS leaders and on the response of lesbians and gays and their growing numbers of supporters.
ProtectMarriage argues that “irreparable harm” coming to them if same-sex couples are allowed to marry.
