I was visiting with some extended family last night. As it always happens with Mormons the conversation turned to THE CHURCH. In this case it was assumed that I would soon be called to be a scout leader of some sort. I smiled and said “no, that isn't likely to happen”. I was happy to leave it there and move on to another topic but the good Mormon wouldn't leave it.

GM “How old is <your son>?”

Me “He's eleven now.”

GM “So he'll be in scouts soon.”

Me “Yeah”

GM “They'll call you for sure!”

Me Simply shakes head

GM “Why not” in a demanding tone

Me “Because I've learned the power of the word NO”

A few seconds of awkward silence ensued. Then Mother of GM, who knows of my apostasy, steps in and prevents any more discussion. I guess she didn't want her daughter exposed to the idea that someone could and would tell THE CHURCH no.
