Why Moroni?

Wouldn't Nephi (built a temple) or Jesus or Smith himself perched atop the Mormon Temples be more apropos?

I've never understood the Angel Moroni with a trumpet. The angel in temple clothes from The Old Nauvoo Temple made more sense.
