In a dramatic illustration of the decline of the Deseret News, the paper's article on today's BYU football game for at least a few hours contained only a single file photo from, get this, a practice game. That's right! Wide receiver Luke Ashworth has an explosive performance, catching 4 touchdown passes in the first half, and all the Deseret News has is a practice file photo. Pathetic!

The Salt Lake Tribune (a rival newspaper) even seems to be taking a thinly veiled swipe at the Deseret News lack of photographers with its title covering the same game: "BYU pummels Colorado State 49-10 (with photos)"

(the trib article had close to 29 photos which were posted throughout the game and immediately thereafter)

Apparently the 43% staff reduction is taking its toll. See article about photographer layoffs.

What does this say about the church if its newspaper cannot even afford to have adequate photography for a BYU football game?

(note: by the time you read the linked football articles, things may have changed, but this was the state of things as of 4:39pm MDT)

They always invite people to send in photos that they show in the background during the weather. The Deserted News can ask fans that are at the game to send in their photos. Think of the money they can save!!! And the fans will feel so SPESHUL to have their photos appear in the Deserted News.

Next to go: sportswriters. They can just have fans send in their accounts of the game. One staff member can sift through them, and post the one they like the best (who cares if it's accurate). BYU WINS PUTS THEM IN NATIONAL TILE GAME!!

The file photo of Luke Ashworth happens to be by a Stuart Johnson, one of the many photographers laid off.

http://utahphotojournalism.com/2010/08/43-of-staff-cut-at-deseret-news/Apparently all photo techs have been laid off.

Is the photography staff trying to send management a message? i.e. If you think you can get rid of most of us, this is what photo service you can expect?

Our local paper can send photographers to snap photos of HS games. The DN can't afford to hire a photographer to snap pics of a BYU game in Colorado???

I'm surprised they can't just hire a local photographer to freelance for them. I know sending a DN staffer would cost travel money, but they can't find a Denver photographer to send/

That's really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Why even pay money for such a lousy paper?

By comparison how many photographs are available of the City Creek development?

"...by their fruits shall thee know them..."
